Hunted south central NE on sunday. Numbers were low and our shooting was worse than horrible.

Hunted south central part of the state this morning, didn't do quite as good as I thought I might, but was still great getting out and seeing some birds.

Scratched 4 by the skin of my teeth today and yesterday. Today took until about 9:15. Pulled a scotch double on a small flock of greenwings after sunrise, then two bluewing singles. A huge drake bluewing with just a hint of color was a good end to the day.

Just a few more days to go. Don't know if I will have to motivation to get up tomorrow morning or not.

Tried to get a quick hunt in before Teal season is over. Had an eastern basin to my self. Was a little late in setting up and it cost me some chances. Most all of the traffic was in the first 30 minutes. Less than 50 teal seen, less than 25 big ducks seen. Only got a couple teal to come too close. Bagged only this one. I scouted this basin on opening weekend, it had maybe a little more water this morning than it did then.

Went this morning and the same result at the basin I hit. Saw maybe 30 teal total, brought home 2. Numbers are definetly down from last week.

Scouted all evening yesterday until I found some teal for today. NOTHING around in the basins as far as concentrations go. Stumbled on some backwater by mistake that hadn't been hunted. Boat saved the day, no way I could have walked it in. Push poled my butt a good half mile to get to the ducks. Couldn't see the ducks very well last night, so I assumed they were teal.

First light proved otherwise. Majority of the birds were woodies. Had me real nervous to shoot as the teal and woodrows were mixed in. Didn't fire the first shot until a half hour after sunrise. Could have easily had the three drake woodies and a handful of other random big ducks. Saw Mallies, spooners, gads, wigs, woodies. Went fast and furious as soon as I started shooting. Wacked a single out of a pair and then tripled on a HUGE flock of 50-75 that decided to land on the boat. Birds were flying all over as I was picking up. Had the marsh entirely to myself, know for a fact no one else has hunted it yet this year unless they are really tricky.

Decided to call it a season on that, a good way to end one of the hardest and least birdy teal seasons I have seen. Might be an easy limit for a couple of guys tomorrow, but I think I would finally rather sleep in. 44 solo birds, 11 hunts. Lost a single cripple.

Good to get things started, shooting skills are nice and warmed up. Now we need a bunch more rain.

I was having second thoughts about heading out Sunday. With no good reports and the warm weather it seemed like maybe I should just sleep in, but the thought of waiting 3 more weeks to hunt again was scary, so I headed out. Went to a new spot to make it worth it in case the teal weren't flying. One other group beat me there but that was nice, allowed us to each cover one side of the marsh. Saw some small groups of teal, got one, some big ducks too. Had one large flock of 20-30 blue wings suprise me and almost run into the back of my head. Poor shooting left me with just these two on the morning. Saw one nice flock of pintails, and some other big ducks, in fact I don't think I saw a teal after 8 am.

Nice work Pat! Push poling 1/2 mile sounds like one heck of a workout. How are your back & shoulders? It almost sounds like you slept out there in your boat from your post...It sounds like you had a great early teal season. Congrats! Hope to run into you out in the RWB.

We shot less than 20% greenwings this year. Compared to probably 40% during an average year.

That is including the GW bias. If I see a greenwing, I am going to wack it over a blue. Why? I have no clue, bluewings taste better and I think look cooler anyway.

Poling is actually very easy in the Momarsh. With such a small profile and how high it floats, it will skim right across the water. If you have a long enough pole you can really get to flying. I can pole probably three times as fast as I can walk through a marsh. The only killer is that weeds in the water can slow you down.

On the other hand, there is no way you could have walked to the backwaters on this place. Too deep, too much crappy mud bottom, too many weeds. I would be surprised if I see another person there all of LPE. Besides the fact that it looks impossible to hunt, stumbled on it by luck of the draw, ain't on no map.

My report of the day...

On the way to work this morn, had to do a house in Plattsmouth, crossed the Platte 10 minutes or so before sunrise. From the time we were a mile off the river til the time we crossed on the HWY we saw 5 different flocks of ducks, high, heading west to east...trickle push migrators that are in Mo by now.

With 2 weeks to go for LPE and 3 weeks til LPL, THIS WEATHER SUCKS!!

I sure am glad that no ducks migrate untill December anymore. Just another push ducks we missed by having this later season. look on the bright side it will probably be 85* for the LPE opener!

Long range forecast is looking NICE for the LPE opener. Temp wise this would be the nicest opener I can remember being a part of. The 30s for lows is gonna be abit chilly in the tent, but those 30s for lows is gonna make the boat breakfast taste that much better.

Got a report from 8 hours north of the border a few days ago. Whites finally started showing up in good numbers as of Sunday but still not full bore. Its been dry and HOT, like upper 80s and sometimes in the 90s when its in the lower 70s here.

Its still about the calendar date and moon phase, tomorrows weather in 3-4 weeks, a guy could shoot til his arm falls off if he was a outlaw. Tomorrows weather in 3-4 weeks with a full moon, it would be something magical.

The good fullmoon this year isnt til first week in Nov, take your vacation then.
