You know that feeling of your mouth watering right before you are going to yak all over the place? Just got it.
Anything that is so big, tastes like a pile compared to ducks, is about mesmerized by the call 95% of the time, is so predictable. Well. It is fun a few times. ![]() PO |

1/2 cup soy sauce 1/2 cup brown sugar 1/2 teaspoon smoked sea salt 1 teaspoon garlic powder 1 teaspoon onion powder 1/2 cup thawed orange juice concentrate (frozen can type) 1/2 cup honey dijon mustard 1 cup honey Mix all ingredients EXCEPT THE HONEY together. Keep 1 to 1 1/2 cups of marinade back to use later in the glaze. Cut large duck and/or goose breasts into chunks about the size of a teal breast filet or a little smaller and place in the marinade for at least 4 hours. I usually start mine one evening and then cook it the next (24 hours later). Stir or mix occasionally. Mix the remaining marinade that you held back with the honey to make the glaze. Toss the duck and/or goose on the grill and baste with a little of the glaze. Cook to medium rare (medium if ya just gotta) and then lightly drizzle the rest of the glaze over the meat and let it sit for a few minutes before serving. Then call me or post up here and shower me with the highest praise possible for turning you onto the most incredible waterfowl dining experience on the planet!

In the sandhills for 3 days last weekend and shot a mix of gaddies, widgeon, ring-necks, mallards, teal (bl & gr) and 2 drake woodrows (gorgeous!). Also got a banded goose (male) at least 7yrs old banded in the same county I hunted, it was a huge bird. No new ducks or geese to speak-of at all despite the heavy NNW winds, BUT the low clouds could have masked any migration cause we saw cranes to beat the band Sat and Sun and they were low headed south. Had 2 Swans show-up on Saturday on one of the lakes, so something was pushing. Most birds seen were gadwalls, widgeon and ringnecks in the area. Disappointing bird numbers, but fantastic hunts. Just can't beat the scenery.
Sounds like more birds on the move, especially the greenheaded variety. Gotta get my deer first though. Id eat a fat canada (not a 7yr old one) over a duck any day. A chicken-fried goose is unbeatable! But Im gonna try WildBill's deal with a slight variation, by aging the ducks in buttermilk for 24 hours. |

Hunted a sandpit about half way between Cozad and Gothenburg for about 2 hours. LOTS OF NEW DUCKS!!! Managed to get a couple of mallards in miserable conditions. Have about a foot of very wet snow on the ground here. Got stuck 3 times, last time couldn't get out, farmer on his tractor came by on his way to feed cattle and pulled us out. A bottle of Crown Royal has already been delivered to that farmer......

Went south today...close to Kansas and had lots of mallards and pinnies in the area. Saw a couple flocks of hutchinson geese with some specks mixed in... ended up shooting 14 between four of us...real fun day with some good buddies!

Got 3 GW teal and a hooded merganser on Saturday. Hardly any wind this morning. Only saw a few high flyers along the river; nothing came in close...

Saw 4 or 5 good groups of teal this AM, would have limited if we could shoot, saw one lone mallard drake and shot a widgeon... Saw a good group of specs and a couple groups of canadas... Nice morning, a bit too nice but a good first out for me this year...
Talked to one group that shot a few buffleheads, not sure why they would be here now, but a pretty duck none the less... |

Hunted the Platte both Saturday and Sunday mornings, wow what a difference in 24 hours. Saturday morning there were birds all over the river, seen several flocks of teal that had over 80 in them, a lot of high traveling big ducks, and quite a few decoying bunches. Ended up shooting 14 between three guys on Saturday, all bigger ducks, mostly mallards and gadwalds, very fun hunt. Sunday we saw maybe a quarter of the ducks and they didnt want to play at all, only shot two. T-shirt weather by 9am probably had something to do with that.
Looking at the ten day forecast, it's not looking too good. Highes from 50's to 60's, lows around upper 30's. Pretty boring, no winds, fronts, etc. Dakota's look the same. Lets just hope the weathermen are wrong as usual. |

This time of year any north wind will bring new birds. It is gonna be close to 70 today and there are ducks and canadas migrating as I type this. Last night was almost dead calm but the moon had the birds moving in force. Its getting to be that time of year where fronts arent needed, just the date on the calendar and a slight north wind can bring alot more birds than you think.

I always think of it like this. I am sick. Gonna be sick no matter what. Would you rather be coughing and sneezing shooting ducks or would you rather be coughing and sneezing laying in bed bored as hell? Maybe that is why I have a hard time getting over these illnesses.

What a weekend...Most work I have been through to shoot ducks in quite sometime. Limits 4 days in a row in the basins, but it took windshield time and brute force. Had each different place we hunted to ourselves everyday; I am glad pheasant season is here.
Saturday, A ton of new ducks around. Far and away the best duck hunt of the year so far. Flocks of 50-100 wigs throughout the morning. Saw some amazing decoying action. Had the marsh to ourselves. Put on a little show for the lonely group of pheasant hunters waiting. Shot out the two of us by 10, taking our time. Diversity haul: Gads, green, wigs, BWT, greenies, and a limit of drake pins. Incredible crane migration. Constant flocks all morning long. Saw ducks of almost all species. Including most divers except Cans. About shat a brick when we walked up on 20 cranes sitting right where we were going to set up early in the morning. ![]() Sunday. Slower. A fraction of the ducks. But we made what we had count. Pins were everywhere as they were the day before. No problem shooting out on bulls. Finished at 7:45 on a flock of 6 greenwangs. 1 got away from us. The amount of pintails this year is just incredible; they really did have an amaxing hatch. ![]() Me and my afroing buddy. ![]() Monday. Solo. A few new birds early. I had an exam today, so I needed to shoot and run to get back and study. Plus, I chose the wrong corner of the marsh and was off the X by a few hundred yards, so the big ducks gave me the finger. Popped a drake ringer and a sporting limit full of greenwings. Didn't see very many geese until today. Mostly chickens this morning. One flock of specks before legal. ![]() 30 ducks in the last three days means a ten hour nap tonight and then back behind the windshield tomorrow to find some new ones and start it over again. PO |
