I just took my 10 yr old son out shooting his first shotgun (20 ga) last weekend and he loved it. He's not the biggest 10 yr old, so I was a little nervous that he wouldn't take to it, but he did great.
Now, I'm trying to figure out the best way to get him into hunting. I know that when I was a kid, I loved rabbit hunting and was wondering if E. Nebraska had any good spots? I've only lived here for a year, so I'm still trying to learn my way around. I'll check out the hunting regs, but, if I remember, there's also a special youth deer season as well isn't there? |

Rabbits are plentiful and under utilized resource. They are fun to hunt and good practice before moving up to bigger game. In our area, coyote populations have been down and rabbits up. As far as your kid(s) go, there are special days set aside for youth before the regular season openers for pheasants, waterfowl and deer. There are also mentored youth hunts available for the same thru local organizations like Pheasant Forever, Ducks Unlimited, etc. Just gotta get in contact with some your local chapters and ask the how and when these youth events occur.

we have a rabbit problem at fishman34 and my house
. I don't think the neighbors would appreciate a shotgun going off in the neighborhood though..

well, the mower has been very effective so far...got 3 in one day...but 5 in the nest survived. I felt really bad so I called the wildlife rescue people and they said to put the babies back in the nest and cover them up and put something heavy over the hole. at night, take the heavy object off and the mother rabbit will move them to safer place. Sure enough, the next morning they were gone and now we have 5 little bunnies occasionally hopping through the yard.

Southeast Nebraska Public hunting areas are loaded with rabbits. With cedars growing out of control, there is an aggressive effort by the NG&P to erradicate them. Witch means that there are a lot of brush piles all over the place as hiding places for those little piles of fur. Another thought as a game animimal to chase would be squirrels. I beleive that there is not a huge group of hunters chasing them.
