I was watching a video about calling deer with the can. Great invetion right!?
Well there was an "expert" who explained deer calls, frequencey, duration, pauses and volume when calling. The video was pretty typical and most of the stuff you would already know or have already done except one part, the deer can calling. The cans are built to just turn over and let them drag out right? WRONG...he explained that when you let the entire can flip over it is a sound of distress and alarm...What he had said is that you call with quick turning motions and short pauses, especially with the larger and longer cans. I have been using the cans this way all season long as opposed to last season and my success in calling in deer have been great, too bad I'm pretty pick on the deer I want to harvest ...Some people might know this but some might not. I figured any small facts or opinions that would be worth a shot trying out would help. Try it and see if it works, if not go back but I've only called with the can for two years but it's a great set of calls. |

I tried the can this year. Doing it like I thought I was sopposed to. I was seeing lots of deer in the mornings, I would make a couple calls and everything would dissapear for about 1 hr. I tried this a couple mornings with the same results. Fri evening I went out with the bow and had 3 does just out of range, I tried the can again and they started snorting and ran off. So I got out the grunt tube and blew on it a few times and had a buck come right in, I'll stick to the grunt tube, but will try the can again, just next time the way you explained.

Doing it the "wrong" way for the last 2 seasons I have never had a buck in my sight that did not come closer to investigate that sound. I have only got to test it on 2 mature bucks but they both came in looking, just more cautious than the young bucks, tried circling downwind.

Do what works if long moans aren't working switch it up. Sorry just not a complete believer with what he said. (if its the older guy who looked like he did the video in his basement with a buck hanging on the wall in the back ground) |

I believe I saw the same video on youtube about this. I believe his last name was Faduicci (sp) and he was a field and stream columnist. I could be wrong, but I watched it this weekend.

if it was peter fiduccia, the guy is one of the most knowledgeable deer hunters there is. the can call does sound like a fawn bleat when completely drawn out...i have called in many does with it. however, during the rut, bucks will usually investigate the sound no matter. i do think a shorter call sounds more like an estrus bleat which is what the can is trying to imitate. |
