Default Omaha hunter drowns in Missouri River boat accident

Omaha World-Herald online:

Quote:
An Omaha man drowned when a boat carrying five hunters capsized in the Missouri River.

Ignacio Roman-Bahena, 37, drowned Saturday morning when he and four others fell into the river after their little fishing boat starting taking on water, Otoe County Attorney David Partsch said.

The accident occurred south of Nebraska City, Neb., near the Hamburg Bend Wildlife Management Area.

"The boat was overloaded," Partsch said.

Roman-Bahena was pronounced dead at St. Mary's Hospital in Nebraska City. Partsch was awaiting autopsy results Monday.

The Nebraska Game and Parks Commission, Nebraska State Patrol and Otoe County Sheriff's Office are investigating.
A larger version of this story in this morning's print edition said the boat was a two-man jon boat rated at 300-lb. load capacity. Five guys with hunting gear in a two-man jon boat? On the river! Unbelievable!

Thats terrible. I have seen many waterfowl boats overloaded and underpowered.

Charges are pending in this case, so I can't add much, but yes, overloading was a factor, as was the lack of required safety equipment.
