I am training my new pup and have run into a training problem. I am working on "stay" with her and she is an unwilling participant. I have her sit on leash and hold the leash up while walking away and motioning stop like a traffic cop. When I do this, she backs away like she is trying to get away. As if she were scared. I have not ever hit her and I don't understand why she is doing this. Any ideas?

She might just be pulling against the lease out of instinct or playfulness. I like to use a stationary object like a mailbox or leg of a table, take the leash around that and it forces the dog to stay as you walk away. Then if you want to work on the “come” command you just let the leash go.

my dog has been great with everything so far except the "stay" as well. He is getting much better now since I changed the process. I was holding the leash as well, now I hold a treat, and drop the leash next to him and say stay with the hand command as well and i walk away watching him out of the corner of my eye. The second he makes the slightest move I turn around start the process over.
He has learned quickly that he doesnt get a treat until he stays stills and doesnt move until I call him.

You could try losing the leash and making her sit, starting in the house, on a little square scrap of carpet, that is used only for that.
This is the "sit" spot. Start inside in a confined area, then move outside and then lose the carpet once she understands the command and hand signal. Is this a pointing dog? Or an inferior breed? ![]() |

I would say just keep trying, repetitions, repetitions, repetitions.
I started training my dog with sit and stay. However, I would recommend you only use the sit command. Less confusion for the pup. He can't be sitting if he's moving. Sit means sit until you tell him/her to do otherwise. Only one command to train and enforce. Just thought I'd share as I learned the hard way. Best of luck with the pup. Enjoy the journey.

Thanks everyone. She is a smart pup, but seems to want to be dominant in the household. She tries to assert dominance over our other dog, my wife and kids and even me. I think this is a lot of the problem, but one I better get a handle on.
