So with Obama being our new president and promising change...What do you all feel about his forth-coming actions on gun control and bans?
I was just reading a new article stating that he is trying to get taxes raised to 500 percent on ammunition... along with manditory registrations and self-defense firearms being more difficult to purchase or possess. I know that it would be very difficult for him to totally reconstruct the 2nd ammendment but he's going to make it extremely difficult for us outdoorsmen. What do you think will happen? |

I see nothing in that link Chad posted that is gonna make being an outdoorsman more difficult. Someone isn't being truthful and that'll be the toughest thing to figure out;who's being honest and who isn't.Alex

Obama says that even though he doesn't hunt or fish outdoors-man have nothing to worry about with regards to gun control and conservation issues. I believe him he doesn't seem like he is a liar, time will tell.

I think for the so called "average" hunter, like most of us, things will be okay. Yea, I believe we might see some increase in ammo manipulation, cost etc. I do see a push to restrict or make it more difficult to purchase assault type weapons that really aren't for hunting activities; whether that be good or bad, I think it will happen and those in power may or may not have a good reason for doing so. Depends on our personal thoughts and beliefs I guess. I also see a change tightening the laws on handgun control; not necessarily banning them but tightening of laws. May be even a bigger emphasis in this category.
I have a close friend who absolutely believes most of our gun rights will be taken away. Personally I don't agree with that and have a good idea where that philosophy may be coming from. Again, a matter of personal beliefs what we want to think, how much we are influenced by everything we read, who is disseminating the info, etc. Whatever, will be worth watching closely and if need to speak up, then we should at the right time based on facts, not assumptions.

It will be interesting and i'm sure it won't be good. And as someone before stated all it's going to do is make it worse for the people that are using guns for the right reasons. Us hunters will be affected and the criminals are still going to get their guns no matter what.

My thoughts (hopes) are we won't have to worry about this in the near future because:
1) If the chosen one focuses his efforts on gun control rather than this huge mess of an economy/jobs, he will lose a ton of support. 2) Even Clinton said gun control got most of the dems booted out of office and the chosen one will do everything possible to be a second term President. The second term (if it comes) will be very scary as a gun nut. If I am wrong I hope you all like hunting with bows and single shot slug shotguns. And don't blame me because I didn't vote for him!

I think some people over react over the whole situation. While I wasn't an Obama fan at election and still am not, I have a stong feeling that he will not tare our outdoor worlds apart. Remember, laws have to be passed through congress. Obama is more worried about the economy and how to end the recession than he is about trying to increase gun control and take away your fishing poles.
Personally, Im more worried about the situation in the middle east, and what is going to happen if our forces pull out too soon. What kind of cutbacks will the Military make? A decrease in size or less money for Units to use new technology? My opinion is that if we don't do the job right over there, then that will just invite them to bring the conflict to our country.Im not worried about Obama taking our guns away, people just say that because he is a democrat and are under the false impression that democrats always want to ban weapons. Im way more worried about my job in the Army Guard, but I am going to do whatever he wants because he is going to be the Commander and Chief and thats my duty. . If I saw a non bias video of him claiming he was going to do away with guns and hunting rights, then I would change my mind. Thats my personal feelings on this issue

I'm not as worried about the president as I am the Democratic controlled Senate and House. JMHO

Here is a link to Obama and gun control.
Barack Obama on Gun Control Look down the page to the semi-auto part. He supports ban on all forms of semi-automatic weapons. Like others have said I think he has a lot more to focus on right now and this is down the list aways. Still something to be concerned about however.

Yeah, it's OK, they can ban them bad black semi-autos 'cause my Winchesters and Remingtons are safe. Who cares?
Funny thing though at the range today, a guy was shooting one of those bad black rifles and making several tiny holes in the target. My 1100 punched great big gaping holes in the paper. And then, he shot at the metal gong at 200 yards and when he hit it, it went "dink dink." When I hit it with my 270 it went "kerwhang" and moved a little. When I hit it with my 338, it went "KERWHANG!!!" and flopped up over the hanging rail. Gosh, how long will it be before my 338 is declared a WMD? Or my 1100 is a weapon of too much lethality that no sportsman needs? And the 270? Jeez if there ever was a "long range precision sniper rifle", there it is boys. There is no such thing as "good" gun in Obama's mind, regardless of what he says. All gun control does is invite more gun control. We must stand together or we'll hang separately. |

“Do you or any members of your immediate family own a gun? If so, provide complete ownership and registration information. Has the registration ever lapsed? Please also describe how and by whom it is used and whether it has been the cause of any personal injuries or property damage.”
Seems like a fair question to me. PO |

It may be out there, I just haven't seen it yet. I see more of a return to the Clinton-era gun control, much of which was passed in a Republican-controlled congress.

I'm not overly concerned at this point. Unless there is a major domestic incident that prompts a knee jerk reaction from the goverment...there are currently much bigger issues to deal with. The main issue is going to be the economy. If that ever gets figured out then they will move to healthcare.

Original "Assault weapons ban" passed by Congress on Sept 13, 1994 and signed into law by Pres Clinton the same day. The "Brady Bill" was signed into law on Nov 30, 1993 and went into effect on February 28, 1994. The GOP did not gain control of the Congress until the midterm elections in Nov of 1994. The Dem's gun control measures were cited by Pres Clinton as one of the reasons the Dems lost control of Congress in '94. A GOP controlled Congress did allow the AWB to expire in Sept of 2004 however. Obama regularly supported gun control measures as an IL state Senator. Don't know about the increased tax on ammo sales but I hear it mentioned often. Who knows? It would be change, wouldn't it? Obama's views: Sportsmen for Obama? - Gun Control Quotes |
