Default What is the longest shot on a deer? Bow and/or Rifle.

What is the furthest that you've shot and hit a deer or animal with either?

My longest shot was on a moving buck chasing does at ~460 yards with a 30-06 I'll never do that again, it was all instinct that came into play.

Archery was only about 30 out...

My longest shot was this year at about 200yds. Most deer I've shot have been 100yds or less. Not trying to be an A-hole, but I've never been impressed with people talking about long shots at deer,(especially on the run), because I don't think MOST people should be taking those shots anyway. I start thinking in the back of my mind, how many shots did that person miss before actually connecting? You never hear, "Yep, shot at a nice buck, 400yds on a dead run, think I just crippled him, ran off over the hill, never saw him again".

And just for the record, I'm not talking about anybody in particular, just in general of things I've heard people say.

25 yards with a bow, 150 rifle the majority would be under 10 yards and under 75 yards

Bow 43ish (didn't range). That is the only one over 35 though. Majority 15-35, with a couple closer.

Rifle 250ish, only a couple over 100 though.

Yeah the average is between 100 and 200 yards. Besides that deer, I've never taken a deer over 100 yards.

If you had confidence in a long shot would you take it?

I believe that it depends on what caliber you are using. The kinetic energy of a 22-250, 243 or .270 would be risky but if using something with a little more energy and a heavier grain you shouldn't have a problem.

I think there's more to it than confidence. There may be some shooters out there that have "confidence" in 400 yd. shot, but in reality, have no idea what it takes to make that shot. If your confidence is based on hours of practice and making that shot many times on the range, then I don't have a problem with it. If it is confidence based on, "I think I'm a pretty good shooter. I bust milk jugs at 300 yds all the time," then I would say that's more like wishful thinking.

Have any of you seen "Best of the West" on the outdoor channel? Those guys practice shots at 5, 6, 7 hundred yards and routinely make them, with no problem. They also have the proper equipment and knowledge to performe those shots on a regular basis and they claim that they can teach anyone how to achieve those shooting skills. Its all in what you have practiced for and your confidence levels, there is nothing unethical about it at all if you have the skill and confidence to do so.

I am pretty confidant out to around 300. Any shot I would take over 200 yards would require that I know the distance within a few yards, the wind was very light, and I have a very good rest. If I can't steady the crosshairs within 2-3" of wiggle, I will not shoot. The longest I have shot is 184 yards at a standing deer. My rifle is a 7mm rem mag. sighted in at 236 yards.

This is my sight check group from this year.

Those guys on "Best of the West" definitely know their stuff. Have you looked at what the products they use cost? But like you said, gotta have the right right equipment to do the job at 800 yds.

Mine was at 316 yards on a doe that was walking. One shot is all it took. No wind, and -6 degrees with the sun shining off the snow. Man it was a beautiful moning.

Do you guys really consider shooting such distances(400+yds.) even hunting?? Just wondering.

GSPointer,
Why is it sighted in at 236yds.?? Seems like an odd distance unless it's a specific distance your'e shooting from/to?? Again, just wondering.

According to the velocity of my bullet and its ballistic coeffecient, when ran through the ballistic program I use, I am 2.5 up or down to 275 yards.

Gained my new longest with the rifle the other day. 352yds out on a doe. She limped about 10 yards and piled up. I love it when they don't even know what hit them.
Shot her with a .280, 138gr core-lokt's.

277 Paces +- for zig zagging walking through a muddy cornfield. Just this rifle season. Nice big Doe, compensated for drop and wind and put one through the head right above/behind the jaw, dropped where she stood...

Ruger M77 MkII Stainless - .270 Win Nikon Buckmasters 3x9 -HSM 150gn BTSP

+- 300/325 is what I consider my personal maximum depending on conditions present.

I just had a gunsmith hunt with me that killed a rockchuck at 2500 yards last summer. He accuracy tested the rifle he built for me at 1150 yards. With the right equipment and practice very long shots are not that difficult in the right weather. What gets difficult is doping the wind. I won't shoot long if there is very much wind.

I would say it depends on species and terrain, As far as eastern Nebraska whitetails....rifle hunting was not challenging enough for me. I usually hunted only 1 or 2 days. Now I spend a lot more time hunting and the rifle shoots coyotes. A 400 yard shot is impressive but nowhere near as rewarding as any shot with a bow, IMO. If I had things my way....there would be shotgun/muzzleloader seasons for buck tags and rifle would be doe only and of course there would be bow. Maybe that would improve ratios and genetics?

When would you propose these seasons be?
