What started as a few random thoughts on how we might get Forum hunters and fly tyers together to exchange materials has blossomed into what could be an All-NEFGA Party for members who live within range of Mahoney State Park.
The Lodge at Mahoney offers a very reasonably priced dinner special on Monday evenings: Monday Night Special: “All the Pasta You Can Eat” Choice of 2 sauces and garlic roll = $4.99 10 & under Kids Menu = $.99 (1 per adult purchase) Full restaurant menu also available All Forum members and their families (kids, too!) are invited to attend the dinner. Since we’ll be going through the public line, and eating in the public dining room, we can begin anytime after 5 p.m. Those of us who arrive early will try to “stake out” some of the tables with the best views. Our after-dinner speaker, for everyone who would like to become a Certified Nebraska Youth Fishing Instructor, will be Andrea Faas, director of NGPC’s Aquatic Education Program. Andrea will conduct her certification class from 6:30-8:15 pm downstairs in the Cottonwood Room IF, I repeat, IF we can promise at least five and preferably 10 students that evening. The class is free, interesting, helpful, and requires NO minimum commitment to the program, but we, of course, hope you’ll recognize the great volunteer opportunity it represents to help young people. To pre-register for the post-party class Dec. 1, email Andrea at Andrea.Faas@nebraska.gov or PM me and I’ll contact Andrea for you. (If you live further west, remember that Andrea is offering the same YFI certification class Wednesday, Dec. 3, at Kearney.) “Gift Exchange”: The staff at Mahoney has donated the Cottonwood Room to us at no charge , and we’ll have access to it beginning at 5 pm. We fly fishermen on the Forum will set up our materials and tying vises in the back of the Cottonwood room as soon as some of us finish our spaghetti. Hopefully, we’ll have several examples of non-fly-fishing items (jigs, walleye rigs, etc.) to exchange that night or later for any fur and feathers you bring. I’ll be there to encourage some of the Forum’s best tyers to demonstrate their skills. This is a great chance for Forum members within driving distance of Mahoney to load up the whole family for an inexpensive night out, and to meet other Forum members who also will have spilled spaghetti sauce on the fronts of their shirts. What could be more fun and informal? (Even if you stay for the YFI Certification class, and I urge you to, you should be home in time for the second half of Monday Night Football.) (You will, of course, need a park entry permit to get into Mahoney, but you already have one, right? If not, one-day passes are sold at the gate.)
