Default Hunting Land Question

I thought the NGPC listed farmers that had too many deer and needed assistence in having some taken off the land.

Am I missing something or does it no londer exist? A couple of years ago I used it a few times with great success.

I've never heard of that, but it sounds like an excellent idea.

doesn't exist anymore I called about it last year b/c I took someone out who needed assistance and I thought that would be the perfect opportunity for them. I called the NGPC and they said they don't do that.

Thanks Obert. That would explain why I couldn't find it.

Obert, I think you may be thinking of the SANDS program. SANDS lines up handicapped individuals with Hunters and fisherman to take them into the field or lake.

Nah Tomich, I'm a part of SANDS. This is/was different. There used to be something like this, I think it may have even been on the NGPC website at one time? I'm 99% sure there was either a program or they were looking at setting something like this up. I could be wrong though, I thought for sure I had seen or heard of it one time too.

It would be nice to have something like this. I know along the river and a lot of places on the east side of the state have way to many deer. I'd be extremely happy to have a place to go shoot doe without the the public land worries. Not that I'm opposed to public land, but it's nice being on a piece that's not completely a free for all. That and I want to take my daughter out in the blind, maybe not this year anymore but next for sure. Makes me a little nervous being on public around Omaha with her. A program like this would be perfect for someone like me wanting doe and a landowner wanting to get rid of doe.

It was a great deal for both the farmer and hunter. It listed the farmers name, location and phone number.

I went to one person's place and he was so appreciative of me coming out in not only taking 3 doe's but in helping with some work. The following year I called and was informed he had passed away. His son, on the other hand, wasn't as nice as his dad.

It was a great program and I wish it was back. Someday maybe.

Apparently there is still such a program. I called the NGPC and they said the person who handles that program is out of the ofice until Monday. That's not going to help me this weekend but it may come Muzzleloader season.

You guys are talking about the "Deer Network" program.

I think it's still an active program. Hunters can call their area G&P offices and get the contact info of landowners enrolled.

Now,if there is still(cause there used to be for sure) a deer network program linking landowners with deer problems with hunters then IMO the NGPC is doing a piss poor job at promoting it.With today's technology, deer over population, upset landowners from crops lost, trying to promote more people into the outdoor sports, etc., a guy would think it would be front page stuff to read. Heck, they have pushed this donate a deer thing this season quite well. However,if guys don't have somehwere to hunt, what good is the donation program or how much better could it be if they incorporated both??

The NGPC is going after the low hanging fruit in that they are catering to those with access. For those of us without a place to hunt they want us to try our chances and take our luck on the over-crowded war-zones known as public hunting.

After last week I may never hunt public ground again.

I was driving around looking for unoccupied public hunting spots. After hours of driving I gave up and was headed for home. As I drove past a CRP field in Pawnee County a NICE buck ran out in front of me. When I slowed down I heard a shot. I looked to my right and there was a guy about 150 off in the field firing at the buck as he made his off the CRP land and onto private land. As I sat stopped in the road the guy was waiving me out of the way so he take more shots across the road at this "wallhanger".

That incident and the fact that every place I went to was already occupied just isn't right. I don't want to walk in to public once people are there for two reasons.

1. Safety: If they don't know where I am and vice versa - that's dangerous.

2. Walking in on somebody else's hunt is just wrong. Yes it's public land but people should be respectful of those there first.
