Im looking at getting a Fred Bear Super Kodiak recurve. I was wondering, I was shooting a 50lb model, and it felt very very nice..but is that adequate for shooting a whitetail? I really dont know, just wondering if 55lbs would be better. I pulled the 60 and didnt really like it, but they didnt have the 55 at Cabelas but they can order it. It wasnt that I couldnt pull the 60 back fairly easily, but it just felt a little overbearing. what do you guys recommend? 50 or 55? also, ive got a 29" draw, so that really actually probably puts me in the 52-53lb range being its 50 @ 28"

I shoot a bear recruve and it is way different. You can't hold it back like you do a compound but 50# is enough. One thing to make sure of is that you need to be consistent with the angle of your bow and shoot different weight of arrows to see what best fits your needs and hunting excursion. Also NEVER use rubber fletching, use feathers, better flight and accuracy. The rubber will lightly bounch off the shelf.

Yea, and that 50lber is cake to hold back. I draw about 68 on my hoyt right now, so it actually seemed quite light. I just want to make sure that it will be effective in penetrating a deer to lets say 30ish yards. I would never be shooting farther than that....heck Ive only shot one deer farther than that with my compound.

I've only shot one deer bowhunting, and that was 26 years ago with a 50# Bear Kodiak recurve. 45, 50, 55, or 65 -- dead is dead. It's where you put the arrow.

the super kodiak is my dream recurve. right now i shoot a martin rebel which is a fun little bow. i think 50 would be fine, especially if your draw length is a bit longer. one thing i've noticed is that despite the poundage, all it takes is a few weeks of practice before it starts feeling normal. i stopped deer hunting with my recurve and now use it only for bowfishing. the one thing that has improved my accuracy and instinctive shooting more than anything is bowfishing with a recurve. also, i would say when shooting traditional, accuracy is the most ethical thing to focus on.....if 50 feels good, go for it. i shoot 70 lbs. on my compound but have never used a recurve with a heavier pull than 55 pounds at 28".

I'd say you'll be more than fine with 50, but if you want 55 I'd order it. I would buy exactly what you want so you dont' wish you would have later. You'll just have to decide if you really want the 55 or if the 50 is what you want.

I shoot 55 pounds on my longbow and it gets the job done. With a recurve or a longbow the key is to aim quick and release, you are not going to have time to aim like you do with a compound. Also shoot feathers they fly better but as of right now Im shooting rubber fletchings and they fly fine.

I shot a lot of deer back in the day with a Bear Kodiak 45#. Not only that I got the bow at the old Green Stamps store for two books or something like that I think. If I remember correctly, that was about $40.

50 is fine. my old man has been killing deer since season opened in 60s with a 45 pound kodiak.
sharp arrows will give you more penetration than pounds of thrust. ![]() Jim |
