Default Rumor Mill

Has anyone heard of a bull elk being shot south of Brady on Sunday morning?

Nope....but it's possible for someone with "Bigtime Buck Fever" to not I.D. their target before shooting.....

I wonder what happens if someone shoots an elk thinking it was a deer?
Do they get in trouble?
If not, will they get to keep and process it?

My guess:

The elk is confiscated and kept for evidence by the GFP and the shooter will get in major trouble. No matter what circumstance and age/sex of the shooter. I'd guess it would be a major deal if true.

Wouldn't surprise me, happens more often than we think. If someone did shoot an elk and it they contact the CO immediatly, chances are, they will just recieve a fine without liquidation damages, the liquidation damage fee's are when the overall costs get huge.

Maybe I'm just feeling uncharitable today, but (if the story is true) I can't think of a single good reason why any hunter would mistake an elk for a deer.

I know nothing about a bull elk being short near Brady, but...

Somewhere near here (they didn't reveal the exact location, but probably Keith or Garden County), about three weeks ago, a hunter did kill a cow elk, mistaking her for a deer. The hunter was fined AND assessed Liquidated Damages ($1,500). It was front page of the Keith County News, but not picked up statewide by AP or anyone, and KCN isn't online, so I have no article to share with you. The meat was donated to a local VFD.

So, it happens!

Scott

Scott,

Did the hunter report himself, or was he caught after the fact?

If I remember right the hunter reported themselves right away and thats why they didn't take his guns and his hunting rights and gave him just the fines.

Couldn't ID a cow elk within bow range??? What is being taught in bowhunter ed?? I could understand mistaking a whitetail for a mulie, but an elk. I wonder if shooting sandhill cranes and saying I thought it was a speck would work.

I was thinking that too.. three weeks ago they had to of used archery equipment. (bow or x bow) Unless there was a 'special' hunt in that area with ML equipment to take in the deer heard someplace. (like they do at other areas)

He turned himself in, but would have been reported had he not done so.

This was during the special Clear Creek early ML season, and it was shot with a smokepole.

**EDIT: I had to correct several factual errors in this story. What I was originally told was NOT the truth. I spoke personally with one of the COs involved today, and got the right story. And I heard it originally from a co-worker (not a CO). See what the rumor mill can do!

I heard a story along the same lines but much funnier. I can't remember what state this was in but in this particular area there are herds of wild donkeys or mules and a hunter from NY shot one. If that wasn't bad enough he took it to a check-in station and told the game warden he needed to check in his mule deer. After looking at the "mule deer" the game warden just smiled, tagged the thing and said have a nice day. (insert joke here)

Okay, okay... It's YOUR mule deer! But can I at least get my pack saddle off him? Gadget

Bump, to point out the fact that I have to humbly correct my misinformation above.
