![]() ![]() I took this deer Saturday morning it came out of the woods about 25 yards from my stand. My shot was obstructed by a tree that I left to cover me up because I did not expect them to come out of the woods in that area. The deer continued on a path that I had no shot until it came to a place where it was about 100 yards away walking through the woods. I saw my only shooting window left and whistled at him to get him to stop in it. It was a Y of a tree and my bullet struck him. He ran off and I found him about 2 hours later. Used my 30-06 to take him down. This is my biggest deer so far. It was fun trying to lift him up in the garage to hang him. |

After helping one of my Grandpa's old hunting buddies tag a buck opening weekend I decided to go ahead and get a rifle tag for myself and hunt out the rest of the season. After passing many smaller bucks on sunday and monday, I spotted this buck while going along the edge of an alfalfa field.
By the time I got around to him he had made his way into the pasture about 150 yards. So I rushed up to the fence and rested the rifle on the fence post. Once the crosshairs were lined up on just behind the shoulder, I squeezed the trigger and watched the buck drop in his tracks. No need to say, I was pretty happy at this point. After making a few phone calls and taking a couple pictures my dad showed up to help get him in the truck. He's one of the bigger bodied deer I've shot. Here's the contest pictures. I didn't get a very good picture of the width, and if it's not good enough just let me know and I can take another one tommorow. ![]() ![]() ![]()

nice buck Brett!! But it sounds like you need to work out more if you can't load up a deer yourself...

Here is my entry, I'm hoping I did this correctly?? Sorry I don't have any in the field photo's with the contest paper I forgot it at home. Thanks for having the contest!!
![]() ![]() The BTO Buck I was able to sneak out of work and get out to my spot around 4 in the afternoon. I decided to still hunt along the bottom of a big ridge of oak timber to see if I could spot anything. I was slowly creeping along, not seeing anything when all of a sudden BTO's You Aint Seen Nothing Yet is playing. Crap, I grab my cell phone out of my pocket, get it open and its my lovely wife wondering if I was going to be able to get off work to hunt. I told her I was out in the timber already, she wished me luck and said goodbye. I took about 10 steps forward look ahead and see a good buck standing about 700 yards to the South. He was with a doe. Now it decision time, how in the heck am I going to get the distance closed? I am very comfortable with my shooting abilities out to around 350 yards. Meanwhile the buck disappeared behing a large brushpile. Now let me tell you guys in High School I could run a 10.8 100 meter dash, but that was 20 years, 20 pounds, and a back surgery ago...anyway I think I probably came pretty close to that time as I covered the 350 yards I needed to get into position for a shot. I found a thorny locust tree to rest on about 350 yards from where the buck should come out, the doe he was with was eyeing me I figured she'd beat feet out of there before I could get a shot. About then I saw his antlers over the top of the South edge of the brushpile, he was coming out. Everything was going to plan. He stepped out broadside to me, I had a good solid rest....I took a deep breath and let my finger slowly pull the trigger. I got right back on him in my scope as quick as I could after the shot, wanting to get another shot into him. He ran a small half circle and headed my way, before I could shoot again he tipped over. Now I needed to run another 300 yard sprint to get to my buck. :-( I got to him and he was everything I though he was when I shot. I always worry about ground shrink after I shoot a buck, but that wasn't the case with the BTO buck he was bigger than I originally though. He is a mainframe 5x5 with split brow tines, and three stickers. He's a great buck I called my wife on my cell and told her I had a good buck down. She swung by home, picked up the kids, and came over to help me get him out. Their help was much appreciated. Thanks again for the contest, I don't know why my dang pictures won't show up here? Good bucks everyone. Corey Last edited by holdemplyer; 11-24-2008 at 12:41 PM. Reason: fixed pictures |
