Had kind of a crappy day decoying birds compared to expectations about the day, but managed to knock this guy out of a flock. Pintail/mallard cross?? It sure looks like it to me. It was real cool, the head color switched from green to brown depending which way the light was. He is going on the wall for sure.

That is sweet Blake! Both you and Josh are on my hit list because of you luck. Behind a speck wearing a plastic neck tie and a Nebraska Black, a pin/mallard cross is pretty high on my wanted list.
You gotta put that thing on the wall! If not, give it to me and I will put it on mine. ![]() If you have ever seen some of the ducks "The Waterfowler" has posted on the fuge, you would be amazed. He has mounted both wild pin/mallards that have been shot and a bunch that have been specifically raised. As well as a slough of other hybrids. If you would have shot that fella in December you would have seen the pin sprig actually curling like a mallard curl. God those things are awesome looking! Congrats, that is once in million duck. Thanks guys, its definitely was one of the cooler looking ducks I've ever seen. Just the coloration in the head was so awesome. One angle it would look exactly like a greenhead of a mallard, and the next it would be the brown of a drake pintail. I was hunting at a buddies blind, and the owner of the blind wanted to mount it so its going to be on his wall. Otherwise it would surely be going up in my room. I did take it to my taxidermist though around Fremont, so I will be able to get pictures of him after its done being mounted. He hasn't decided what to do with it, but I think it would be the coolest flying with the wings out or cupped. That way you be able to see the long pin tail and all. I almost think this thing is as cool as a band!
Pat what is a Nebraska black on your hit list? That would have been so sweet to shoot that thing in December. It woulda been sweet to see that tail all curled up. Also as stated above, would you count that as your mallard limit or pintail limit? Not sure if they even have rules for this situation?? |

I'm guessing when Pat says a NE black, he's reffering to a Nebraska Black Duck.

They have strict rules on hybrids back East where hybridization between black ducks and Mallards is a huge problem. Basically, any identifiable marks (i.e. white bar in the speculum) suggesting that it could be a hybrid sends it into the Mallard limit so that more hybrids get removed. Here, it is certainly not a problem and there are no strict guidlines. But, I it is generally goes to whichever species shows more prominence. I would always go by the speculum ( not that it occurs too often ). Josh's he shot last year would go into the mallard. Clearly has mostly mallard in it. Yours looks closer to a pin. All of the pics I have seen of Pin X Mallards look mostly like pins, Josh's is the one exception I have seen. Genetically speaking, hybrids are horrible, especially when they are fertile as is often the case between Black X Mallards. Shoot them all. Give yourself a pat on the back for removing that bad boy from the gene pool. ![]() ![]() PO |
