They have strict rules on hybrids back East where hybridization between black ducks and Mallards is a huge problem. Basically, any identifiable marks (i.e. white bar in the speculum) suggesting that it could be a hybrid sends it into the Mallard limit so that more hybrids get removed. Here, it is certainly not a problem and there are no strict guidlines. But, I it is generally goes to whichever species shows more prominence. I would always go by the speculum ( not that it occurs too often ). Josh's he shot last year would go into the mallard. Clearly has mostly mallard in it. Yours looks closer to a pin. All of the pics I have seen of Pin X Mallards look mostly like pins, Josh's is the one exception I have seen.

Genetically speaking, hybrids are horrible, especially when they are fertile as is often the case between Black X Mallards. Shoot them all. Give yourself a pat on the back for removing that bad boy from the gene pool.

I ate a black from Nebraska.

You should try a mallard/pin cross on the grill. It will probally be your only chance.
