Default Weekend Weather Cool Down

Dont know if you have checked yet, but the weather this week is cooling down here in the eastern part of the state. Saturday and sunday highs in the mid 40's and lows around freezing!! Looking good for bowhunters, and waterfowlers.

For the fowlers - would it be better to hunt Thursday-Sunday, during the crap that's predicted for Thurs/Fri or Saturday-Tuesday, after the crap's blown through? Trying to plan a couple days off, and can't decide which would be better, I have no problem sitting in the crap if it means ducks.

Im on the fence about this one...

Very few ducks are being reported pretty much everywhere to the north after this last front. But on the other hand, I have yet to see too many divers or any Goldeyes. So either...the chitty hatch effected the fall flight worse than any of us ever thought it would or there is ALOT of ducks up there that nobody is seeing or saying anything about.

I know that the Snows are really stacking up in Ne SoDak and NoDak so I might be concentrating on them as they grab this wind and come to us.

As for timing...The winds are supposed to pickup out of the north on Wed in the Dakotas, while we have a south wind until Thurs. Unless the Dakotas get hit with rain, Thurs will be the better day for ducks...if its raining then hunt Friday. For the most part, rain/snow will delay the migration but they usually showup within the hour that it stops.

I wouldnt expect too many migrating big Canadas for another week or so, then hunt the north wind in the middle of the day under clear skies.

Ty is going to be sitting in his tree stand watching the waterfowl head south by the droves. He'll head out to wack some greenies only to have a rutting buck walk past his layout. Welcome to the world of "what do I do" and the "woulda, shoulda, coulda" of hunting. It's only a short time util Ty asks if he can shoot ducks out of his tree stand.

I don't think this front is going to bring down much... Early ducks are almost all through, besides a few remaining in the Dakotas that might get swept down. There are only a few specks left, but I think some snows might have a good chance of catching the wind.

The low pressure is coming out from Colorado, sweeping through W Sodak (non-duck territory), and then moving S through Nebraska. It is a bad line for a system to move ducks. So I think it won't move much down for Mallards. Divers, a few left over gads, wigs, and pins, and snows. But nothing that I see right now really gets me going.

To be honest, I would rather see those 20 degree temps at night disappear. That only spells problems for the basins. As soon as ice starts forming, duck days in the basins are very, very limited. We have less than a month of soft water in the basins, and I would much rather have an extended season with warm temps and skittish ducks where you can still kill them if you scout than SOL in a week with one good push of ducks.

Seriously I remember an opening morning of rifle about 3 years ago that was like that. Wow they were fighting that south wind tree top level. I could have had a limit of specks and snows.

Im sure most every dedicated waterfowler remembers that day. Here I was hunting in the woods with my dad.

Ill let you know how I do.

I remember that day too, they were pushing the day ahead of a front, 30mph+ south wind and like 70 degrees.

Started the morning off shooting afew wigs, nothing special. Flights started to pickup around 10, it was cool to watch the migration progress. Started with afew teal, wigs, and Gads. By 2 started to see more and more Mallards and by 3 it was all mallards, common mergansers, and goldeyes. Was tough getting anything to work with the south winds. About 4 the winds switched west and it was a pounding for the last hour. I never would have stuck it out if I knew the snows were pushing the way they were. They didnt want to fly low over fremont so they were skirting us all day, we never even saw em.

Next day, I fully expected a massacare, north wind was howling, and the lake was full of ducks before shooting time. First volley of the morning jumped those and we hardly saw another duck. They just vanished like the day before didnt even exist.

I agree with you Pat. I don't think we will get alot of new birds down but I think it will help. Just checked the weather and the temps look like they may bottom out at 26 degrees one night. If that happens you may see some ice form on small shallow areas. If that happens we may see the ducks bunch up a bit in the open water areas. This will drastically help. The area that I have been hunting is fairly large and the ducks are spread all over.

There is a blizzard watch out for parts of South Dakota and the same for parts of North Dakota.

Willing to bet we will see a bunch of snows blowing south this weekend with the north winds predicted. Probably Saturday and Sunday once the skies clear after the crap coming on Thursday and Friday, as well as the full moon coming next week. Probably a few new ducks as well and who know maybe even the first push of cacklers as well as greaters! Gotta be optimistic..... Snows will be on the move for sure. IMO

Hmmm....snows. I might have to dig out the windsocks on saturday.

Still can't decide if I want to spend saturday morning in a deer stand or after ducks and geese.

Just got off the phone with a FWS friend on the border of ND/SK. Great numbers of whites moving and excellent hunting, no darks or ducks to speak of. Hope some birds hit and stick in NE.
