I had a few friends go out to Mead on opening Sat and said it was really bad. They hunted all morning and only saw a few birds. Only one shot at the one rootie they saw, and of course they missed. I guess there wasn't much grass to hunt and some of the grass fields were off limits. It seems like every year that place goes down hill a little more. Anybody else head that way last weekend? I thought about going this weekend, but it doesn't sound promising.

After walking all day Saturday and not seeing anything to shoot, I have come to the conclusion that I no longer will waste my time pheasant hunting here in NE. When it comes to upland hunting I'll keep going to SD where there are birds o plenty. In addition to last Saturday's day of exercise, every other time we've hunted birds here resulted in lots of walking and no shots fired. I guess the benefit to that is we saved our shells for when we went to SD.

I would'nt give up on all of Nebraska. I have already given up on southern Nebraska but northern Nebraska has plenty of birds. I love the area around Pierce, lots of birds. I think it's kind of one of those things where the farther you get from Omaha and Lincoln the more birds you are going to find. Which makes for really long days in the truck! Maybe next time I'll take my turtle

My brother went with a big group of guys and through 3 fields they shot around 50 pheasants. That's also private ground and with 12 dogs, but only in 3 hours of hunting. The only pictures he has were on his cell phone, otherwise I'd post some.

I understand its private but we're in central NE and my dad and I got 4 birds off public ground which isn't as good as usual, but as said the crops are all in the fields and we had about 5 inches of rain.

Living in Mead my whole life, I have spent alot of time hunting south of town. Used to be a gold mine for birds but not anymore. While bowhunting, I rarely see/hear any roosters these days.
