Default 2008 Deer Hunting Reports

Not sure if we have a report page but maybe we can get this one going and sticky it at the top. Kind of get a feel of where the rut is and how its doing.

It's been about a week since I've been out hunting. Was hoping to get out after school today, but decided not to with the way the weather was.

I did go do some scouting the other night though, saw alot of deer, a few smaller bucks no big ones. Not to terribly much activity that looked related to the rut though, but I don't think it'll be too long before they really start goin after it.

I was up near Decatur today hunting and while I did see lots of movement before 9 am with this front moving in I did not see any rubs or scrapes in the area. Seen about 20 does and a couple small bucks. Also seen a larger buck about 200 yards north of me that was with 2 does. I only caught a glimpse thru the timber but all I know with the naked eye I could see he had a big body and some big white antlers. Im sure its the brute im after. I grunted to him but he was too far to hear. Bringing out the antlers next time out.

Also put some doe in heat in front of the trail cam to see what bites.

Hope to get out this Sunday and hopefully put a good couple days next week.

Also forgot to say that most all my trail cam pics are showing morning and evening movement thru the area. Still barely any nocturnal pics.

Scrapes were hit VERY hard this last week..On one property I was kind of disapointed because a couple scrapes that were usually hit hard weren't being hit...That isn't the case anymore..Almost anyplace there is a branch low enough that they can thrash there is a scrape...Also got a pic. of 2 smaller bucks sparing on the trail cam..It was a more agressive spar thought you could see the bigger one of the two was really pushing the other one around throughout several images.

seeing a little sparring on trail cams. I moved mine over a very fresh scrape where two canyons meet. Hopefully I will have some good pics to post soon.

I found a few scrapes on my stomping grounds as well.

This weather is really given me the shaft though, I wanted to get out tonight before this rain turned to snow, but I quickly found out I wasn't going to be able to make it down the minimun maintenance road, it was a mess.

Had 2 deer brought in to me 3 days ago, one from south of Grand Island and one from the Niobrara (sp) area. The one from GI, I was told, was chasing 2 does when he shot it. This deer had a very large neck too. The one from the Niobrara (sp again) area had a much smaller neck and I was told he was with 2 other bucks

Just a couple inputs I'ver heard from other hunters I thought I would pass along.

went out last night with my brother just outside out town. we started out with a little calling and soon had a couple 1 1/2 year olds in our lap. i was calling and filming and he was the shooter. the next buck came in about 45 mins before dark and was a decent 2 1/2 year old. he had huge brow tines, his right one was probably 9 or 10 inches! josh passed on the deer but after reviewing the footage we decided he was indeed a shooter buck. hopefully tonight, we'll be giving him a ride home. there was a much bigger deer that stayed out of range all evening, but he was fired up, thrashing a sapling in front of us. we also had a scent wick with some golden estrus out and the three bucks that came in were all milling around the scent, confused. this was the most rutting action i've seen so far, but i have not hunted much this year yet. this was right outside of lincoln.

Had a very hugh buck brought in last night 160-170 class that was taken not far from the Lincoln area. This deer has great mass and lots of extra kickers. Individual said the buck was chasing does hard, and was heavy in the rut. Deer was extremely big overall, neck and body. I make it a point to ask people as they bring them in to see what is happening where with the rut. I will post some pics of the rack as soon as I get some.

i went out again last night to play in the mud. after finding a good place to get myself and my gear muddy, i settled in around five for the evening hunt. i started things off with a bit of light rattling which sparked the curiosity of a nearby doe and her offspring. the doe came within bow range but we were worried about spooking any bucks, so we let some fine eating wander off. minutes later, a six point we have developed a personal relationship with came by to check things out. he decided to hang out, i guess he did not realize he was not the company we were seeking. so he stuck around for about 45 minutes which limited any calling we would have done. we ended up seeing lots of deer movement, but no noteworthy headgear. once we were all muddied up we decided to go muddy up the inside of my truck and then home to leave muddy boot prints on the kitchen tile.

Went out this morning for some hunting and some scouting. Tried to go to one of my blinds, but the wind was different then what was forcasted, so I decided to just watch some of the fields on the new land I got permission on. Saw alot of deer, most were in the cut bean field and the corn, didn't see any in the alfalfa.

After watching the fields I got out of the truck and did some walking, found alot of good sign. I'm pretty sure theres a nice buck roaming this property, and I've got his bedding area pinned down. I've got a few stand sites picked out, but moving stands is going to have to wait untill we can get to the ones that are getting moved. It's a muddy mess out there.

Here's a little teaser of what I found.

Went out this morning. Saw 8 does and two basket racked 8 points. The two bucks didn't act like they were rutting much. Could have stuck both of bucks numerous times, just not what i'm looking for.
