Thumbs up NEFGA Gun Dog Blitz, Sponsored by Cabela's - POST ENTRIES HERE

New Contest

Here's how it will work:

Contest Host: Chad Abresch

Contest Sponsor: Cabela’s… The World’s Foremost Outfitter

Contest Dates: October 18, 2008 - January 31, 2009

Contest Prize Package: A total retail value of approximately $1,000 in gear will be evenly awarded to three contest champions ($250 for upland and waterfowl champions and $500 for the best in show).

Contest Description: Contest participants can submit one entry (with culls or additions permitted throughout the season) of their bird dog actively engaged in hunting. The entries can be either photographs or videos. At the close of the contest, all submissions will be entered into poll threads where NEFGA members will cast their votes for the best gun dog in each of three divisions.

The divisions will include:

Please note: Members can compete for votes in only one of the three divisions. Members competing in the Best in Show Division will not be eligible for the Upland or Waterfowl Division.

Upland Division: All entries of dogs hunting upland game birds (pheasant, quail, etc.) during the season are eligible for submission.

Waterfowl Division: All entries of dogs hunting waterfowl (ducks and geese) during the season are eligible for submission.

Best in Show Division: For members who choose to submit an upland and waterfowl entry.

Feel free to ask questions...

Question Voting Discussion - What makes a great gun dog?

The risk with contests that rely on member voting is that they become based on popularity rather than hunting skill. To avoid this, I encourage members to consider and discuss gun-dog attributes that they respect and will draw their vote.

Here are a few things that stand out for me:

- A dog that hunts for the handler, rather than for itself
- A dog with a drive for birds that is second only to its drive to obey
- A dog that demonstrates awareness and alertness
- A dog that moves well through all types of terrain and cover
- A dog that demonstrates confidence and focus on the task at hand - does not get distracted

What does your list include?

South, do you take the photos yourself? Or, do you have someone with you that just takes pics instead of carrying a gun?

Chad,
Very nice and easy setup/rules for the contest. Does retrieving plastic ducks count??

Nothin wrong with leaving some seed stock

South there is something wrong with your dog. Its sitting there staring. Looks like you need to kick it.

Well, my new pup (7 weeks) can come when she is called and likes to play with a "pig chew toy." Since she has only begun her training, she really can't compete to the older bird dogs. Can there a special devision for most adorable puppy or future bird dog?
