Default Sandhills Sharptail Shootout

Sept. 19-20,

The 24th annual Sharptail Shootout grouse hunt was held in the Mullen area last week. 19 teams (5 people/team) shot 245 birds = about 13 grouse and/or prairie chickens per team.

States represented: NE, MU, CO, IA, WY, KS, NM, TX, MT, AK, WI, FL, and Washington.

A 25 rock trap shoot on Friday is also part of the competition. Lance Griggs was the only individual to go 25/25 on low flying Wobble Pat Trap targets. The Shifty Shooters won the teamed event hitting 117/125. Dismal River Ranch Dismal River Outfitters :: Big Game Hunting, Nebraska, Joe Jurevicius, John Howell, Trophy hunting, bison, elk, whitetail deer, mule deer hosts the Trap Range and they also have a very challenging 13 station Sporting Clays Range hunters could test out but was not part of the competition.

Awesome conditions Saturday morning, little wind and a heavy dew, keyed what most hunters deemed a successful day of grouse hunting. Dogs were able to grab scent and pin point birds within this 100,000 plus acres of native Sandhill range provided by participating landowners. "Trigger Happy" went 17 shells/ 15 birds, and finished at 10:16 am in the grouse hunt to win the New Shooters division. Past Shooters first place team went to "The Shot Slingers", who retrieved 15 birds with 18 shots, last shot fired at 10:34 am. As always, a great time was had by all.

Next year will be the 25th anniversary of the Sandhill Sharptail Shootout. Sharptail committee members are hoping to fill the 6 New Shooter teams of the 20 team field by March of 09. Vice President Shelby Hardin states there is a waiting list for Past Shooters to get in the grouse hunt, but we haven't filled the New Shooters teams consistently over the last 5 years.
