Default Training Collars

Does anyone have any advice on buying training (shock) collars? I would like to get some for my dogs but I dont know what brand(s) or models are good. Right now I have been looking at Sportdog models, mostly because of cost. I would probably get two collars. I would like to get ones with 1/2 mile range, but I dont know if I need that far of range for bird hunting. Thanks for any suggestions.

I'm partial to TriTronics Pro series myself, as a training collar for pointers. It gives several consistent levels(18) without taking your eyes off the dog. Very important to make corrections timely.
The more range the better if your dog gets out there at all. When you get into hills and trees, range is cut severely.
Sportdog is a good collar, but used mostly by retriever guys.
Dogtra T&B 2500 is a good collar for hunting, has a great beeper system; but I don't like the linear(no steps) intensity adjustment for training. It makes you look away from the dog to change levels, as does having any digital readout to tell setting levels.
I'd stay away from DT and Innotek, personally.

Whatever you decide, make sur to check out the collarclinic website. They have pretty good deals on reconditioned collars. I prefer Tri Tronics also.

depends on what kind of dog you have. tritronics probably the best name out there, but sport dog isn't bad either. i'd definitely recommend getting more collar distance than you think you need b/c that rating is an absolute best case scenario, and in the field you can basically cut that rating in half. i did see scheels in lincoln had a 1.5 mile sport dog model on sale from for 199, 50 bucks off, might be worth a look. good luck!
