my uncle bought one of their side by sides in 20 ga and he hasnt had any problems with it. He has only used it to shoot some quail over the new pups this summer and on some blue rock but its a nice shooting gun. But can't say anything about the OU

Pick up one of those Tri-Stars and swing it and then pick up a Browing, Beretta, Weatherby SKB or even a Ruger. Break each open and close it.

Unless they've improved the Tri-Stars a bunch, I'd say save your money and buy a used gun of much better quality. It won't be a whole lot more expensive and you'll be much happier.

I've said it repeatedly, but the characteristics you want in an O/U, which is the reason for an O/U being an O/U, cannot be cheaply made. So you have to pay for them.

Another thing with the lower end O/U's, because they don't have the fit, and quality materials, they tend to be a bit bulkier and heavier.

Exactly, the things that make O/U's great take hand work and talent. It's hard enough to make an O/U to begin with, compared to say, a pump and so it's more expensive to begin.

It's too easy to make a marginal O/U and there is a difference, just go to a shop and pick up a number of various guns and you'll see.

Please, Please, Please don't get a Tristar. You will just be another guy in line at my shop to fix or destroy it.
BTW, I do NOT repair shotguns.

I'd look around at used guns; and keep it between Browning, Beretta, Ruger, Weatherby, and possibly SKB.

Would you stay away from the Mossbergs and Remingtons?

The Remington Bakail is a P.O.S in my opinion.

The Remington spartan models are actually made by Baikal, which is a Turkish company I believe. Not on the same level as the older Remington O/Us in quality or fit and finish.

Actually, Baikal is a Russian company. Yes, Remington is importing them and marketing them. I'm a big fan of the Baikal MP153 (SPR453) 3.5" semi auto and use exclusively for waterfowling. It has been a reliable waterfowling workhorse for me and my son a lot of years now. Couldn't be happier with that shotgun. I've been definitely getting more than I paid for with these shotguns.

However, I tend to agree with the above comments about lower end O/U's as they tend to be a bit bulky and clumsy when compared to the higher end models, but are still very suitable for field use.

Baikal's Side by Sides are little bit better as far as handling goes, but the fit and finish are just not to my liking. Still, they make fine field shotguns.

Baikal's offerings are more about function and reliabilty as is the rest of Russia' philosphy on firearms.

A friend of mine had a tri-star until the other day while shooting Trap it went off by itself three times.

I don't want to turn this into a bash thread, and I don't disagree with this statement. However, as Steve stated earlier, fit and finish are integral to the function of an O/U or SxS, so the cheaper guns in these categories, just aren't going cut it.
