Default looking for 20 guage

Looking for a quality lightweight 20 ga to hunt with this year. I've never owned one but my buddy let me try his last year pheasant hunting and I liked how lightweight it was compared to my 1187. Of course his 20 ga is a benelli and is about $1000 and I can't afford that. Anybody have any opinions on a good 20 ga that is more affordable. I took a look at the remington 870 20 guage but it was just as heavy as the 12 ga I thought plus I'd like a semi-auto. Thanks for any help.

Look around. My neighbor just bought a used Benelli 20ga. for $550. Seemed like a good gun yesterday when shooting bluerock with it.

I dont think the Beretta 390/3901 can be beat, regardless of price. Shop a bit, they're around for $550. Check Bud's Gun Shop online, best prices anyplace.

If you don't have to stick with an auto you might want to look at some of the cheap O/U's (i.e. stoeger etc.)

I shoot a Winchester 101 O/U 20 Ga. and love it. Great in the field, lightweight, and very well balanced.

I agree with the others though. Look around, I'm sure you can find a good deal.

Good Luck.

Check out MrPike's thread in the Outdoor Marketplace.

Looks like he has a Remington 870 20 Ga. for sale. $180 and some boxes of shells.

Can't go wrong with an 870.

Has anybody ever used a shotgun made by TriStar? Saw one at Cabela's today, pretty lightweight but I've never heard of it before so I was a little hesitant. Anybody have any info on it? It wasn't very expensive, around $325 for a semi-auto 20 ga so I didn't know if it's a crappy knockoff or worth a buy.

In my opinion save up for a quality gun or go with a pump. Stay away from the cheapo's like charles daly etc...... There is nothing worse than a unreliable firearm in the field. The Beretta 390 20ga is a great gun for the price. I just picked up a Nova 20 from a friend for $200 and can't wait to get it out for doves and teal. A camo Benelli M2 20ga. would be my ultimate little killing stick.

Gotta love shooting ducks one handed.

I just wish the 20 ammo was a little cheaper.

in my opinion, when buying an auotmatic shotgun yo get what you pay for, the cheaper the gun in a semi the cheaper the quality would recommend the nova pump in 20 guague for the price and quality.

I have a Browning BPS pump 20 and like it a lot. It is an "upland special" model with a 22" barrel and a straight grip stock. It's a nice quality shooter.

Man, I tell you what..after years and years of lugging my 12 ga. duck guns in the uplands. I decided enough was enough and went to a 20 ga. O/U and I'm all the better for it. Easy to carry. Easy to point and shoot. Very little noticable recoil. I think my hit percentage has even gone up !! However, when the winds get up and the weather gets nasty, the old 870 12ga gets the call.

Slakline, I'm with you on that one which is why I'm looking for a lighter gun but I've never shot an over-under. does it take a lot of getting used to or is it basically the same as shooting a single barrell?

With any gun......put the tube on the chicken and pull the trigger. Shooting a shotgun should be mostly instinctive.

Does stoeger make a quality gun? I see they sell an over under for a decent price, not too cheap to make me think it's junk but not priced to where you see the major brands so I'm not sure. I plan on doing some looking around this weekend to see what's out there I just don't want to spend too much for a gun when I have 2 perfectly good 12 ga guns I've used for years and years, it's just be nice to have a lighter gun every once in a while.

Does Stoeger make a quality gun??
This really depends on your definition of quality. It will never be considered a beretta by any means but if you want a cheap O/U they are worth the money.

Cons.....
The fit and finish will not be great and the trigger pull is most definitely heavy and not nearly as crisp as a lot more expensive gun. They will not last as long as a top quality gun like a beretta.

Pros.......
They will go bang when you pull the trigger and function just fine with moderate use for years. Because the 'price is right' you won't be so pissed when you scratch it.

In my opinion they are good entry level O/U.

Forgot to mention that the Mossberg Silver Reserve is another one you should check out. I think it is a little nicer than the stoeger.

I have shot all three (stoeger, mossberg, beretta) and I personally own a SxS stoeger 28ga/20ga combo gun and I have 2 beretta O/U's. One in 28ga and one in 20ga. I admit I grab the nicer beretta's most all the time but when I do take out the stoeger with 28ga barrels I am like the grim reaper with it...... pure death!!!! That thing sure shoots where I look. I should really shoot it more often.
