Default gps systems?

I need to buy a gps sytem for my elk hunt. I have never used a gps system, just want to know are they hard to use? What is a good model that is fairly easy to get the hang of quick.

GPS question

Do a search of 'Handheld GPS' if you want more.

There are a lot of good brands on the market right now and most of the companies make units geared towards specific activities. I know most of the sporting goods stores around Omaha offer them but I can't vouch for the knowledge level of the sales folks. Fortunately the new units are pretty easy to use and you can get comfortable with them in short order. Remember these things are not fail safe (batteries go bad, cloud cover prevents good satellite reception, you forget it in camp, etc) so I would also bone up on basic compass skills and carry one of those also.

The Etrex series from Garmin are very small and loaded with features depending upon model you select. When I go elk hunting I mark the truck as a waypoint turn it off and head out. If I need to know where I am at I turn it on and look at it versus the truck waypoint. Very simple to do. I have the Etrex Vista which is the top of the Etrex series. I like it because it has more detailed maps and it also has the electronic compass and altitude read out built in.

However like I said the base line will work by marking your starting point and then if it comes to it that you need it to find your way back just turn it on and tell it to route you back to the waypoint.

They are very simple to use as well. Like everything out there something new you just need to get familiar with it and possibly read the instruction manual.
