Default bowhunter ed question

My 13 yr old son is going to hunt this year. Needless to say, we will be taking the course. Is the course all tree stand safety, and will he be required to shoot 40lbs by the end? He has been shooting all summer and is getting stronger. I have his bow backed down and have been adding a 1/4 turn per week. Not quite at 40lbs yet.

Alot of my course was about proper shot placement, how to blood trail a deer, tree stands and tree stand safety and alot of stuff along that lines.

Thanx guys, I just wanted to be prepared.I am super pumped about this season, and am quite confident he will tag a deer. I think he is a little excited too.

Elwood,

He will LOVE the class....they do a really good job. Way more fun than the regular hunter safety class (though that one is fine too). Congrats on getting him involved, make sure he does things ethically, safetly, and properly. Above all I wish him and you a great season!

P.S. Have him take a doe if he gets a good look at one. It would be a good lesson and great experience!

he only needs bowhunter safety to bowhunt. Just got done taking it with my 12 year old nephew. Was not required to shoot a bow at all during the class just take a test. IN the test we actually had about 4 questions we never even covered in the class. Just be sure to go over the review questions in the back of each chapter or do the online practice test.

These guys have it right. He won't have to be able to prove he can shoot his bow or show he can pull 40lbs. The class goes over many basic hunting laws and things to know when in the field. I don't think he is required to have hunters safety but its still a good idea. They will cover some things that might have been left off with the bow class. With my class years ago the only time we had a bow in our hand was the last day when we just had like an outdoor "fun day". Most of the general handling of the bow, shooting skills and such come from the parent or person helping them learn the sport. IMO I think hunters saftey classes should have something like this at the end.

I hope you mean 172 lbs. Because a kid thats 5'8" 72 pounds has a growth/malnutrition problem.

Eats like a horse and never gains weight. I was the same way at that age.

I stand corrected, he informed me this morning that he was 72lbs at the end of the last school year. Today is bulked up to 84 lbs. His goal is to be a 98 lb weakling by the end of this school year.
