Default NEW ARTICLE - Summer Bird Dog Conditioning

Has your pooch lost his "pop?" Tongue hanging out after a walk to get the mail? Do you have concerns that your bird dog's performance may not be up to snuff when the season starts?

CatfishSteve has penned an original article for our forum readers on how to get your canine hunting buddy ready for the impending season. Steve mentions a few great suggestions on how to get the most out of your dog this season, and it starts in the Summer, not the Fall.

Summer Bird Dog Conditioning | The Nebraska Fish and Game As

Excellent article.
Something I want to add, concerning the high end dogfood. I went to a seminar put on by Purina, the nutritionist made it a valid point to feed the quality feed year round. You don't have to feed as much to get full daily recommended value, and in the long run costs no more and actually is cheaper. Another thing on that is it takes approx. 90 days on the premium feed to benefit your dog; thus, if you start feeding it at the beginning of season, your dog won't get the results till season is over.
Conditioning year round is alot easier on the dog than letting them get fat and workng it off later.
Now you got me really itchin' for November, thanks, Steve.

Thanks, guys!!

Good point, Wirenut, about that high end dog food. There really is an advantage to feeding it year round.

Any benefit to high end dog food for dogs that aren't in the field? For instance I have a ****apoo. He plays around the house but mostly lives a sedintary lifestyle. If I feed him high-end dog food, will there be any benefit? Or will it be more likely to make him obese?

Yes, there are benefits, first you don't need to feed as much to get proper nutrition, so your feed bill would be lower.
Second, you are feeding a higher quality food, so your dog will be getting better nutrition, instead of a bunch of cheap fillers.
Any dog can get fat if overfed and under excercised.
