Default re-fletching

I am in the process of stripping off some old 4 inch fletchings and going to put on 2 inchers. What is the best way to get that old glue and plastic off? I am a little reluctant to use a knife and scratch the arrows and I am not sure if using some kind of chemical (mineral spirts, gas, whatever) will weaken the intregrity of the arrow. The last thing I need is one exploding in my face right before bow season.

I do plan on putting some wraps on to make this easier in the future, if that makes a difference.

After watching Micheal Waddell do it, I used a slightly dull knife and worked it fine, had no problems shooting the arrows. If you are worried about scratching: Cabela's -- Arrow Fletch Stripper

Razor blade and an sos pad is what I used. Then I went to wraps and didn't have to worry about it.
