yea i wish we had more pics to look at then that but i am still saying the same thing. Now for that buck on your page I think that deer is in the same class and it amazes me the game and parks aged him at 1 1/2. What station did they age him at?

Ah, the deer...
I'd say 2 1/2. Judging mostly by body shape/muscle. Going to be a nice deer regardless. Either way he's got a huge potential upside if left another year or two. Great pic husk.

It did not say where the deer was checked in at in the other thread so I don't know the answer to your question.
As for your deer.... with just the head there is no way to even guess what the age would have been. Like was said before aging by antlers is not the way to do it. I will take a guess on what you are going to tell us though. I will say you are going to tell us either 4 1/2 or 5 1/2. In no way am I saying that is what I think it was because there is no way to tell from just your head mount.Last edited by Hunter; 08-03-2008 at 04:50 PM. |

He was aged as a yearling
just joken. He was aged as 5 1/2 and he didnt have a sway back or any of that.. I have film of this buck and he looked like a streamline racehorse. My point is not all of these bucks are going to all possess the same qualities , kinda like people. Saying when a deer reaches 4 1/2 he is going to have sway back, big rounded belly and all that is like saying when a person reaches 50 were all going to have grey hair, and hunch backs. You cant really age a deer by just looking at them, the only way is to look at their molars. |

that is true but infact the one in my avatar I took him to the dentist first and he had a few cavities then the dentist told me well hell that guy is 5 1/2. Yeah man what it boils down to is a shooter is a shooter. Only the hunter can decide that. To a guy and his kid a shooter might be a forkhorn and I have no problem with that. To me a shooter is 150 and up. Dont get me wrong I have shot many 130s when I first started hunting. But as you grow as a hunter at least I didnt see the point in shooting little bucks. The buck in the beginning of this thread in my opinion is not a shooter but he will next year |

Unless you are tagging a deer at birth there is no fool proof way to age the deer that I know of with trail cam pics and in the stand/field. So this is all a guess. The characteristics mentioned should give a person a pretty good guess. Just like humans. If i see a little old lady with blue hair, saggy jugs and removind her teeth I'm going to guess her to be 60+. Doesn't mean that is the case, but it's a pretty good guestimate. My judgements are on a "more than likely" scenario.

But being able to age a live deer is important, it's not just about the size of the antlers. Say you have a dink with a lousy rack, but by looking at him you can tell he's 4 or 5. If you were willing, this would be a good buck to take out of the system to remove his poor genetics. If he is 4 or 5 with a small rack, then clearly this is not a deer you want breeding a bunch of does. Sometimes to improve the quality of our bucks we need to weed out the poor quality older bucks.

as we've all come to expect...no class. but that does seem to be a common trend to people with 200 posts in 20 days, not much else to do with their life. |

this teeny bopper is just a lil big bigger than you little baby pooper scooper, dont forget it. when do you want to arrange that mutt against my setter anyways? since all you can muster up is name calling and all.
