I have flown many times past few years but no with a gun (post 9/11). Looking on line for info on flying with a gun both cases and locks etc. Saw on cabelas about TSA approved locks. Has anyone flown still pretty easy with guns.
Tried to talk a find out what cases are required but I don't speak really broken english. (not trying to be mean just didn't understand her). any help i would appreciate. Also do you get what you pay for on airline approved cases is the plano hardened plastic strong enough. I don't care about waterproof of bullet proof as some company's note. If we are underwater or taking small arms fire I have a whole new set of issues to contend with.

Depends on what airline you are flying. Go to thier website and it should have detailed requirements for guns. There is a federal standard and then each airline makes its own rules also, but everything will be laid out on thier website.
I can tell you this, if you plan on sending ammo, it must be in the original factory box and must be FULL! No partial boxes and no generic carriers with re-loads in them. This is federal requirement. |

Good God, with what it costs to check a bag nowadays (since for some reason they won't let you put your gun in carry-on) it'd almost be easier to find a ffl here and then again wherever your destination is and ship the bugger.

On all my trips to Thunder Ranch I've always put my 1911's in a Cabela's aluminum hardside lockable case. Just had to declare them at the counter and sign the card stating they were unloaded. Of course, no ammo in the same case.
But as suggested earlier, Fed'Exing the guns to yourself via an FFL is a good way to go. Probably more dependable. Nothin's cheap anymore. ![]() |

A few years ago I went down to florida for fish/boar hunting trip...I used a hard plastic case for my rifle and it was completely fine...It pretty much was like just checking another bag in, but I can't remember how much it costs.

YOU DO NOT HAVE TO GO THROUGH AN FFL IF YOU ARE SHIPPING THE GUN TO YOURSELF!!!!!
You only need an FFL if you are shipping a gun AND there is a transfer of ownership. You are perfectly legal shipping a gun to its OWNER. Since you are the owner, your fine. Think of it this way. When you ship a firearm to the factory/gunsmith/any one with an FFL for repair they can legally recieve it. Then they can ship it DIRECTLY back to you! Why? Well your the original owner, no trasnfer of ownership taking place, perfectly legal. Same thing as shipping a gun to yourself. Or having a friend ship it to you, so long as it was yours BEFOREHAND. BTW, US postal service will ship long guns, but not hand guns. Not sure why no hand guns but thats there rules. I have shipped MY guns to myself before using USPS, no problems. |

TSA checks that stuff pretty closely now and they only want full factory boxes. |

It was 2006 elk season, and all that mattered was the ammo was packed away fron the gun. Also make sure you have a sturdy case because they throw those things around like they are junk. My guncase is solid steel and managed to get two dents in it. Looked like someone had smashed it with a baseball bat.

I haven't flown with a gun since Christmas 2006 but the requirement was a hardsided lockable case with a full length hinge on the other side. They do beat the crap out it so the more solid the case is the better. I have had two corners cracked on the case I have over the course of about 10 trips.
Last time I checked for ammo you could only take 11 lbs which is about 3 boxes. |
