My question to everyone is do you prefer mechanical or fixed. I have been back and forth between both and still cant make up my mind for whitetails. Now for elk I can say fixed without hesitating.

Having never hunted with a bow, I can't answer from experience...but I remember hearing that mechanical broadheads used to have flight path issues when they were first introduced to the hunting world. Those issues have probably been fixed since then though.

Fixed, Muzzy's all the way.
A few years ago we had this discussion and a friend of mine, who has forgotten more about bow hunting than any ten people are capable of learning, explained it to us this way. Fixed Muzzy's......There are no equals and there are none better. He was and still is right. Last edited by Black Lab 1; 07-17-2008 at 11:52 AM. |

I've never used mechanicals, but I was thinking about switching to them for this season. I want to give the rage broadheads a try, I've heard alot of good things about them.

ive heard good about the rage, and ive heard bad about the rage. i want to try them, but at the same time i keep thinking 'why fix something that isnt broke'. so i may stay with the muzzy 3 blades and just call it good. havent lost a deer ive shot in the boiler room, so dont really see the need to change.

I've never used anything but NAP thunderheads. Thats what I first started out with, and I just never moved to anything else. I think I'll try rage's this season, and see how they do. I also wanna try the muzzys.

i have used both fixed and mechanical broadheads . i have shot deer with muzzy's, g5 montecs, and last year with the rage 2 blades. usually every year i switch heads just for fun, but this year im sticking with the rages. i have never had a head that flew just like my field points untill the rages. they fly like darts and live nasty holes. but for fixed blades muzzys and montecs are the way to go.

IMO you absolutely can not beat the G5 montec for a fixed blade, and IMO that includes the muzzy's as far as expandables go, the rage is hard to beat, the thing puts holes in deer that look like a 7mm hit it!

i've used g5 montecs the last 3 years with limited success, though they fly really well. i tried magnus stingers last season on a hunt in the snow, i saw 3 deer taken with them, incuding 1 i shot and oh my gawd, we followed the sprays of blood a short distance to all 3. so yeah fixed, and i think stingers are my choice this year.

I like to try different broadheads, just a hobby for me. If you're beginning I'd really reccommend starting with fixed. Muzzy, NAP, Montec, and a lot of others make really good fixed blades that should get you flying straight. This will be my first year with the rage mechs., looking forward to trying them. Always make sure if they don't fly like they should that it doesn't have something to do with your bow. With that said, practicing with the broadhead you end up choosing is a must before heading to the field. Personal choice on mech vs. fixed, good and bad things too both. I trust and am more of a fixed broadhead person myself.

Go either way, they both work as they should. The key is your shooting skills and the set up of your bow.
I myself prefer a cut on contact fixed blade for penetration. I want a pass through shot on all my hits if I can get it. I used to use muzzy in the past but had some flight issues with some. They work great and are durable but fly different for me. I now use the Wacem Triton heads or Magnus Stringers. Both fly exceptionally well and are very sharp out of the package. It's all personal preference and everyone will have a different POV. |

I started out with fixed blades, Cabelas Laser pro mags, may years ago. Killed deer with it but I had a problem with the heads plaining (spelling???) so I went to a mechanical (Satillite I think, and again this was probably 10 years ago). They open from the front. Didn't shoot a deer with them until last year and was disapointed. One got away and I thought it was a perfect hit. The other ran a few hundred yards before her demise. I am not sold on them.
This year I was going to buy rages or montec, which ever I could find on ebay cheaper, quicker. Ended up being the rages (3 bladed) so I'll give them a shot this year. Maybe try montec next year.

I'm fed up with mechanicals, either you are loosing the o ring or on different models of mechs you go to remove one from a quiver and expect to use it quick and you have to reset them.
Going back to fixed, no doubt about it.

I use 100gr Wasp Bullet 4 blade fixed, IMHO these are the strongest truest flying deadliest broadheads on the market. Coupled with a strong regimen of practice it is a deadly combination.

The first time I used a mechanical I had one of the blades break off and the other one bend back and twist. Had to follow that deer way too far. Went back to fixed muzzys and will probably stay.

Nothing wrong with mechanicals for deer hunting. I have used Muzzy 3 blade and mechanicals...I have to be honest here and say that the better blood trails came from the grim reapers...Although all deer I have hit in the boiler room have died...The recovery from the reapers was flat out like someone turned on a faucet of red...
