Default How to spend a Sunday morning..........

Didn't have solid plans for the weekend so I called the landowner to see if Brandon could harass the local turkey population one more time this spring. He said sure, so we loaded the truck at 2:30 this morning and headed out. Got setup about 5:15 and waited for shooting time. Unbelievable amount of owls and pheasants makin' their morning noises as the sun started to rise. Just before shooting time the coyotes started in and that was all the turkeys needed to let us know where they were roosted.Which,by luck, happened to be about 75-100yds. directly behind us.These birds gobbled in the tree for about 20 minutes until the first one flew down. Then, the second came down and Brandon got to see it land about 30yds. right behind us. They toyed with us for about 15minutes as to which direction they were gonna take but then they decided to skirt around us and come out about 35yds. to our left.Brandon couldn't see the birds as they first came into the field but I could and told him to get his gun ready.Once they came out and saw the decoys, one went into full strut and the other was makin' a direct line to the decoys as the other was showin' off.Brandon couldn't tell which one had a longer beard so I told him to pick one cause they were both jakes. He shot the bird at 21 steps from the blind. Now,this is his second bird from the same spot in about 3 weeks or so.He was done at 6:25 so we decided to wait for a little better lighting for pics and continued to watch some other birds that were out in a wheat field that never paid attention to the shot. This bird was just a jake(4.5" beard and little nubs for spurs) but it was cool to see Brandon shakin' like a leaf when they popped into his view.

After we got everything back to the truck we looked for some mushrooms and found a few.The cool thing was hearin' a tom gobbling ahead of us.So,we stepped up against a tree and he gobbled right to us within about 25yds. before he figured out trees don't wear jeans. I'm kinda likin' this turkey hunting stuff cause I'm saving a fortune on ammo for Brandon. Think he went thru about 2 cases for waterfolw last season and has only shot twice for his turkeys. At this pace, his box ofturkey loads wil last another 4 years.

Hope this works. Here's the last few seconds after the one in full strut caught up with the other one. Decoys were just to the right of the birds. My first attempt to video a hunt with this camera. Ya guys better get some from now on. Of course,I'm gonna have to buy a better quality camera too.

Chad,
Ate the first one about 3 days later. Oven cooked and then the leftovers went into turkey noodle soup. The second one has been partially eaten. Sliced the breast meat off and cut the legs off. Half the breast went to turkey tenders. The other half of the breast will probably go into a turkey with mashed potatoes type thing. The legs will go into the crock pot and I think we're gonna try OBG's turkey enchiladas with them.

Way to go, Brandon! I want to hear your version of the story when we get together Saturday; I'll bet it's more colorful than your Dad's.
