Guess they aren't gonna put the dock in until water conditions improve. Still able to launch small boats. They hired a consulting firm in regards to the outlet structure leaking but they say it is "years away" from being dealt with until water cinditions improve. That info. came from the NGPC website under frequent questions. So,how are the conditions gonna improve if it keeps leaking? They know it's leaking, why the need to spend the money to have someone else tell you what you already know?
Why not get in there and fix it and save that great lake? Alex

I fish Burchard a lot and am getting a little nervous about the leak, Its getting worse. What I don''t understand is that I don't belive that it would be all that horbile to fix. I'm in the poured concrete wall bussiness and have repaired many of concrete walls with water coming through them. Know I know we are talking a lot more pressure than a normal wall but what would be so bad about hiring someone to atleast go in and try and fix it or at least slow it down until they can pemanatly fix it. I guess I just don't understand spending all that money on building a lake and then just letting all the water run out. I understand there are steps but isn;t there something that we can do.

Water hydraulics mean that water will always take the path of least resistance. Concrete won't help. It would just create a big leak in the budget. If you try to "patch" it, then the water will go around the patch.

I'm talking about concrete patches. I'm talking epoxy injection hydrolic patches etc. Now I don't mean to over step my bounds but It just seams we could do something. I don't want to sound as the NGAP is not doing anything just seems as we could be doing more. Sorry if this is coming off abrassive really its not meant that way I'm just very concerend about a great lake.

Not a bad idea...would think the NGPC just might have an idea of how much it costs to fix...perhaps that $5 increase in license fees might be used/help with something like this?

Ok first any type quick fix patching probably won't work. From my understanding, the leak is in the foundation of the outlet's down structure. Patching will(could?) hamper the operation of the gates. So either you drain the lake down another 10'(which would kill the fishery) and fix it right or second, patch it and loose operation of the gates. Burchard has a great watershed and water continues to flow in and out without several loss otherwise it would have been dry last fall.

I'm not an engineer, nor do I know the extent of the leak... But there has been many advancements in temporary cofferdams and shoring systems that could be constructed to help in fixing such leaks as mentioned.
If influx of water is a problem, temporary pumps could help in diverting any water that may cause delay. I'm sure NGPC has thought this through... If suggestions are needed, I could help in this department as it is part of my normal job. Don't know if this helped, but let me know if I can? |

Living in Beatrice, that place used to be my home away from home. It wasn't unusual for my son and I to fishe there 4 nights a week. This last year was the worst. Besides the low water, there are so many large shad there now they are taking the lures. I think the lake is in some serious trouble. Anyone else know why all the trees are being cut down? It was nice to have some sort of wind break. Now those are gone. What gives?
