Default Bowling Lake

I was thinking of taking my 10 year old daughter to Bowling Lake for some trout fishing. I was wanting to know if any of you have been there and done this activity. Also, what advice for bait to use as I'm not sure corn and worms would be enough.

I was in Lincoln for training and checked out Bowling Lake. The first day I got there late and my reel got a nasty backlash. The second day I caught a bass! on November 6th! I thought it was a pretty cool setup. There is like three ways to get in and park. I talked to alot of people fishing and everyone was real nice. There was a little confusion as to which lake the trout were stocked into,a seperate lake on the south side or the main lake. I'm sure if you ask around or just watch for a while you can figure it out. Have a good time!

personally I'd think you would have better luck at holmes.

I have not been to holmes and targeted trout in a few weeks but you should do pretty good. I have never been to bowling lake so I can't say much about that lake but they only stocked about 400 into bowling apposed to 4000 in holmes. If you can try to get there early in the morning or sometime towards the evening. seems the trout shut off in the afternoon and don't bite well. throw small spinners and have a rod out with some powerbait. Ive had good luck using berkley powerbait corn fished about 3-5ft under a bobber, depending on how deeper the area your fishing is. If thats not working try fishing of the bottom with a few small split shots.

Good luck

I was out at Holmes last Friday right when the cold front was moving through. Nothing was biting but I saw a couple trout jump.

Yes, more catchable-size rainbow trout were stocked in Holmes than Bowling, but when you consider those 400 trout were stocked into the small pond on the south side of Bowling, well that is a lot less area than at Holmes.

This has about everything you need to know to catch those trout, http://www.nefga.org/web/beginners3.php#III.F.

Daryl, your link doesn't seem to work. Go here: http://www.nefga.org/web/beginners3.php and scroll down to or click on the link on the left side that says "getting started on winter rainbow trout"

Neither was I, and I've been there half a dozen times! I always stay on the north side. Shows how observant I am...

Last time I was there was a week before the stocking. Usually I do well on gills, but I didn't get a single bite that day. Water was still rising from the pump getting fixed. I imagine it's full now.

Just for clarification, there is a small "pond" or bay on the south side that is attached by a culvert to the main part of Bowling Lake. We stock the catchable trout in that small "pond" and I believe most of them stay there.

Any reports from there? I was thinking about going Sunday the 22nd, but I woke up with that sick feeling and a headache. Must of been the pre-game tailgating, the post-game tailgating, and the last call at the bar. Where are my priorities?

Went for about 45 minutes on my way home from wildwood on Saturday morning. Not a bite. It is a small pond, and I just wonder how many are left in there. I didn't give it much of a try, as I had already been out all morning at wildwood catching the heck out of crappies (not really). I suppose they are in there, but there were a couple other guys without anything as well. I really liked when they stocked Bowling with a bunch of trout in the bigger lake. I used to catch them all the time a few years ago.
