Gonna have to look into these new-fangled pike hooks. Looks like they work pretty sweet. Try a couple quick strike rigs too. Gotta find what works best for me. Oh and in these parts the skim ice has been hanging around just about all day. Its comin boys.

Sorry Jim, those hooks been around a long time now. I started out using them 15 yrs ago, but since switched to the quick strike rig. They do work though.
Now you all got me pumped for some ice fishing.

I thought that this had been posted, but I don't think it has. Daryl's good comment:

Here's a simple rig which hasn't failed me yet (of course I need to say yet, because I pay attention to how I run them)....I use oiled Polar tip-ups with 3/0 trebles. I use the left over braided line from my decoys and trot lines (I haven't had one tooth through them yet and they spool out cleanly).

Only fallback of the trot line/decoy line setup is it does freeze overnight and if you're doing a multiday trip, you gotta keep them inside.

I do have a different view on setting the hook...I learned that the pike grab their prey and run, then drop it when they feel they're alone. Subsequently, they eat it. That's when to hook em for sure. So I watch the first run then rip them after it stops and goes again.

There's nothing like watching for flags to trip so get into it.
This topic will surely come up several times before the winter is over, so I might as well take the first kick at it.

You are absolutely right about the feeding behavior of those pike; yes, they tend to grab baits sideways and then reposition them for swallowing head-first. Yes, allowing them to run and reposition the bait makes it more likely for a hookup, BUT if also makes it more likely that you will deep hook a fish that subsequently may not survive. That is why I am a big fan of multiple, small trebles, "Quick Strike rigging", and setting the hook as soon as I get to the tip-up. With that rigging you get solid hook-ups without the guessing and you are a lot less likely to hook vital organs.

Many of our pike fisheries have regulations that require the release of at least some of the pike caught. We should try everything we can to make sure those fish are released with the best possible chance of survival. Hook location is the biggest factor is survivability and the sooner the hooks can be set after a fish takes the bait the less likely those hooks are going to cause damage to vital organs.

That is my $0.02-worth.

With my old Knees my top speed is now overtime mosey, so chasing tipups is out of the picture. i will put in that the Infisherman 2010 ice fishing guide annual has a comprehensive article on tipups interviewing 2 professional ice fishing guides about rigs and tactics on pike.

luck
