Default It could have been worse...

I always wear glasses when I fish. However, I have never had a close call...until yesterday. Fishing with a friend in a 16' cake pan (aluminum) and took a missed hook set tungston weight and hook off my left lense

I now have motivation to wear them for another 42 years...hope I have provided some for you as well.

Good luck fishing.

Yikes!! Missed hook sets are my biggest fear when I'm fishing. A couple weeks ago I layed into a twig that my 3/8 oz jig n pig bumped, and it came flying out of the water straight at me so fast I only had time to tip my head down. It popped me right on top of the head and about knocked me senseless. If I hadn't been wearing a hat, it probably would have took a chunk out of my head and may have ruined the day of fishing if I had to paddle back and get stitches.

Sunglasses and a hat are a must for me when i'm slinging hardware. Although I admit in low light I usually take them off, but I'm much more concsious of setting the hook to the side.

I always hate getting snags from shore because Im afraid if I try to force the hook out then it will come flying and hit me. Ive had it happen many times luckily most times it happened I was able to dodge it.

A couple years ago - on a trip to Mexico, my Dad's friend took a crankbait right into the forehead - no hospital anywhere and he wasnt a "drinker" but he had to take a few shots of whiskey before they ripped the treble out with pliers... the following year, they bought him a hard hat!!

I went fishing with Nate (bob25) once. It was a good time and I learned quite a bit...But I don't know if my insurance will cover me if I take him out again. I think four separate times he slung a hook and cone sinker at me at Mach 3. He may have been trying to kill me.

J/k nate. You're welcome anytime. Next summer we'll definitely have to get out a time or two... Maybe they will lift the boat ban at the base lake and we can get some smallies.

I took a hook to the back of the head when I was 12 or 13 at scout camp. The messed up thing is my mother saved the hook after the doctor removed it and thought it would be funny to make a Christmas ornament out of it. To this day she still hangs it on the tree.

Snags maybe, but you rarely (imo)need to set the hook that hard. I see this monster hooksets where guys lose there balance, and they just make me laugh. I think the monster hookset loses as many as fish as a hookset that isnt strong enough. It doesnt take much to drive in a barb, my fingers can attest to that. Oh, glad you didnt get hurt.

I just about got a hook in the face a few weeks ago on a failed hook set. It shot like a bullet right by my eye. It seems funny and you laugh but deep inside it scares the heck out of you.

About two weeks ago I saw a guy that looked like he fell face first into a tackle box. There were things hanging all over his face. Then I realized they were piercings and he did it on purpose. As I walked by him at the mall I said "hey tackle box" to him. He just looked at me funny and kept walking. I often wonder why people do such things. I guess it is to draw attention to themselves. Huh, if I wanted to draw that much attention to myself I would walk into a crowded room and crap myself. That would draw a lot of attention. Back to the topic...we all have had the close call.

I was using monster hooksets on "The great Bass Massacre 2009" it really worked! OF course the guy fishing with me always had the big air misses. He was probably faking it. I was catching while he was faking. Wait, you were not in the boat. Maybe he was really missing.

Disclaimer: 1tohuntandfish and I are fishing partners and I can never pass up a shot at him. He's a horrible fisherman, who has taught me everything I know.

Couple years ago waleygator and I were canoeing/fishing the platte river and he set the hook on a fish that was very shallow. The weight came back and hit him in the forehead. He had to fish the rest of the day with a trickle of blood coming out of his forehead. Talk about combat fishing.
(and yes I did laugh my ars off)

Your mom really ought to let it go! Reminds me of my dad still acting like I can't run a lawn mower because I ran over a garden hose with one when I was 10 and my grandpa was in the act of using it to water the garden.
