Well, since the board has been slow lately, and I need some help, so I figured I'd give this question a shot.
Has anyone surf fished Maui (Hawaii) before? I'm going next week, and I am wondering if anyone has any advice for a guy that is going to give it a try? My wife likes to sleeps in, and I like to get up and fish. She likes to lay around basking in the sun on the beach, and I like to fish from the beach. Relaxing is refreshing for her, and fishing is refreshing for me, even if it isn't relaxing. All in all, beach trips work well for us. Now, I've surf fished in Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, and South Carolina, so I think I have the basics down. From those trips it seems that I have learned that you can throw artificals near dusk and dawn, but you need live shrimp/other during the day. I've caught/released sharks, bluefish, saltwater catfish, pompano, rays, and even remora, but from what I have gathered, I will be catching some different species in Hawaii. So, if anyone has any tips for surf fishing Maui or Hawaii in general, I would appreciate it greatly. If you have tips on charter trips, then I would be greatful for that info also, as I am considering maybe doing a charter one morning, but most likely only one short (4-6 hr) trip. Hopefully when I get back, it will be close to hardwater time! Thanks all, JB |

Ditto what JB said.
I'll be in Maui from November 22nd - 28th, have never fished in the ocean, and would love to hear any advice. Thanks! |

The only thing I know about charters over there comes from 10 yrs. ago. Trips are very expensive and the captain owns the fish that are caught. I talked to a very upset man that went on a boat and made a deal with the captain so the man could have enough fish for supper, but when they got back to the dock the capt. would not give him any of the fish.

I believe Quackwacker went there. Maybe shoot him a PM.

I don't remember talking about a tip. The way I feel the deal before the trip was made was for him to get enough fish to feed 3 people supper. The Capt. should have honored that before any tip was given. I think the fee was $450 for the 3 people, which was outrageous by the prices in 1999.

I guess I wouldn't see that as too high of price...given location, saltwater...shoot, it was common for folks in the late 90s to charge about $300 a day for one person here in freshwater (paid that for an 8 hour float trip down a Colorado river flyfishing and about $350 for 3 guys to go out for a day on Sidney Lanier down by Atlanta...) about that time, I was also on a 36 hour tuna boat trip that ran $10K for the total cost... Couple of questions you may want to ask about the trip... 1. will you be fishing bottom structure (reefs/wrecks) or 2. open water/floating vegetation clumps or similar? and check targeted species...you may have options with regard to numbers/action versus size... |

yeah we heard that myth too when we were fishing in mexico... so we bought some premade lunches and all of them had bananas in them... the word from the captain was not good on recent fishing... we ended up with 23 bluefins, 2 yellowfins and two dolpins which was more fish caught on that boat for the entire month... and the bananas werent half bad...
