Default Troot at North Park Lake...

So, Slimdog had some "comp time" and I decided to sneak out (It's better to ask forgiveness than permission, I'm told... ) Friday afternoon. We headed to Holdrege's North Park Lake to check the Bin:

And to try to catch some of these:

But, we didn't find the Crappie. Several gills and one Green Sunny, and a half dozen troot. Including one that was a nice surprise:

I did my BEST to convince myself the top fish was a Brookie... but I HAD driven by a Holiday Inn Express on the way to Holdrege, and determined that it is (only) a hatchery Brown! The "spots" along the back just weren't "wormy shaped" enough!

Ended up taking a half dozen back to Kearney and delivered them be-headed and "cleaned" to a couple retired friends.

Including my Motel 6 Brookie!

Harold F.

Here's a "brighter" pic. Maybe some "pointy headed one" can verify my motel expertise.

Hopefully, Slimdog will have some better pics!

looks like a regular rainbow to me. I caught several the first day they stocked them at holmes and about a quarter of them had that orangish color to them... I almost thought I had a brown when I hooked the first one that had that orange brownish color to it but it wasn't.

nice fish btw!

Default North Park Lake Troot Part Deux

Harold pretty much covered everything. Here are some additional pics from today. It was awesome to be out. Hard to believe it’s November. Thanks again, H.

One of the first gills of the day. Looks like something tried to make a meal out of him.

Here are is another pic of Harold’s goofy troot. I guess I can kind of see some Brown.

Some other pics I took just as the sun was setting. I wish we would have snapped some additional pics in better light.

I’m ready for tomorrow to get here. Just need to decide where to fish: Cottonmill? Yanney? Ft. Kearney? All of the above? Sounds like a plan!!!

Not a brown, just a rainbow with a few parr markings retained yet. Some will wash out and turn chrome, some will carry that coloration all the way through. some would say it's a sub-species within a sub-species, not sure I buy into that, though. Neither that, nor do I like to hear it referred to as a color phase because that fish would likely retain similar coloration throughout its life.
Nice run, Harold and Slim.

Nice trout! I've ran into those darker trout once in a while at Holmes.

Thanks, Daryl!

Nah, just another rainbow trout; another example of color variation.

What "Hooligan" has already said is right on. I will add one other thing--that darker coloration is more typical of male rainbows while the lighter, chrome coloration is more typical of female rainbows. Of course those color differences would be most distinct in sexually-mature, adult fish, but you might even see that in some 10-inch, hatchery-reared, "catchable" rainbows.

I would disagree with Mr. B on this one, but I don't currently live in Oklahoma, so I'll buy into his educated opinion.

However, I still went to YAHOO and searched some pics, and found this:

Next time, I'm drivin' by a RAMADA!

Default sunday

I was there sunday and saw 3 people limit out before 10am, little kids. It was such a nice day we went and got my 14 footer. Shoulda took a picture of the trout. They tasted good! I put my recipe on the trout thread in the recipes forum.
At last years fishing clinic, there was a rainbow that was black and purple in the horsetanks. The game and parks guy said the farm trout have so many varieties crossed who knows but they are all rainbows. You can look on the lake stocking guide to be sure. last year they were shastas I think.
SEE YOU GUYS SOON!
