We allow cast-netting and the use of live shad and alewives on Nebraska waters where the use of those live baitfish is NOT a threat to other fisheries especially panfish fisheries; we allow cast-netting and the use of live shad and alewives on waters where there is no risk of transporting other undesirable fish species around (e.g. white perch). I think I will apply for a job in Oklahoma. ![]() Daryl Bauer Fisheries Outreach Program Manager Nebraska Game & Parks Commission daryl.bauer@nebraska.gov Barbs and Backlashes |

![]() As far as a lack of public input, G&P is not any worse (better?) than any other government board/committee/commission. It is incumbent upon us to make sure we know what they are up to. Every meeting is a public meeting with posted agendas. Shame on us if they make a change we aren't aware of until it is too late. Could they do better in letting people know about proposed changes? Yes, they all could. Our City Council just snuck a 5% occupation tax on cell phones past the populace and most didn't notice it until it was a news article about it passing. I saw it coming in the public notices and gave feedback to my councilman (who voted for it anyway). "We the people" need to keep track of what our government does, whether it be the G&P Commission, our city councils, county board, state legislature, etc. |

Glad to see the no live baitfish rule. Hard to enforce but still glad to see it. Was sorry to see it removed from Wagon Train. Darrel knows!
Why go to all the expense of renovating a lake or building a new one and then increasing the chances of rough fish being introduced? |

The 'why ban baitfish, undesirables are just going to get in there anyway' logic runs about the same as 'why brush your teeth, by tomorrow you'll just have to do it again anyway' argument.

Even though tx. ok. and ks,may have better fishing and easier to follow regs, nebraska has less public waters to supply the populace with fishing opportunities, and is just trying to make the best of a situation where farm water use will always win or other water uses like fishing.
thats okay, I found a solution, 95% of my fishing is now on private water or out of state where things like cast nets and live bait are not looked at like the scourge folks here seem to think they are! If it wasn't for the couple of friends I fish with now and then I wouldn't even buy a Nebraska permit here anymore, and now the nebraks resisdent permit costs almost as much as the ks.,ok.,and tx non-resident permits. You want to attract more people to fishing, get back to the basics and quit trying to act like your elitist approaches should apply to everyone else. Sometimes it's nice to just go fish without worrying about if your holding the fish right, and I don't worry about it when the fish is headed for the frying pan anyway. Oh yeah one other thing, bluring the photos! If you don't want everyone to see the pic don't freakin post it at all, problem solved, nobody wants to see your little fish taken out of contrast anyway. what a joke.

![]() I've fished 'those other states' and I have to say this: Nebraska rival any/all of them when it comes to opportunities to catch good fish...while our environment and natural resources may not rival 'those other states' I will put our fishing opportunities up against any... There are places here where big wipers, flatties, channels are available. Places where, if you take the time to learn and figure them out you can catch monster walleyes...and lots of opportunities for bass, bluegill and crappie. I've spent my share of time in states like KS, MO, IA, CO, WY, SD, OK and TX fishing for various species...it's darned tough to catch a bunch of 12inch crappie there too...and the numbers of 'big fish' aren't any different on a anglers per basis I don't believe... I've spent a lot of time learning some local waters...and really love to fish them. I've also noticed over the years that 'moving' from lake to lake every weekend actually makes it harder to be successful. The best fishing I ever had was on Zorinsky while unemployed...I was able to fish every day...and able to locate the bass and 'stay on them' as they moved...if I caught less than 30 in a day, it was a bad day. Knowledge is and always will be the key to success. It really bothers me when I hear folks 'take shots' at NE fishing...no, it's not El Salto or Mille Lacs...it's NEbraska...with it's own uniqueness and quirks...but if you can 'fish successfully here' you can fish successfully anywhere... If a fisheries isn't 'on par' with Texoma...I believe the first place to 'look' is SURFACE ACRES...not NGPC... Thank you very much. |

If you're gonna take a shot at the NGPC, take a good shot, but at least educate yourself first. You know, like they do in OK and TX. ![]() I've always kinda liked Nebraska because it is "behind the times". That's basically why I stayed. If you want to see "progress and development", come home with me to PA sometime. They've got at least 100 yrs of it there and I don't think sportsmen there care for it very much. |

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() All caught and released in NEBRASKA waters using no livebait. I always hear about how crappy NE waters are and I always smirk and think to myself, "Learn How To Fish." So when people come on here and complain about NE waters or their employees, I will just smirk and think to myself, "Learn How To Fish." Mike p.s. Great job Daryl and the rest of the NGPC on the great job you are doing.

First off Im not saying you cant catch fish w/o minnows.Ive caught plenty and 99% of the time I troll cranks after mid May for walleye or toss jigs.I also never said NE waters suck for fishing.Yes alot of them do.I rate B.O as one of the best if not best cat lakes in the state.Wiper is good there.Crappie was GREAT.That being said I PREFER to use minnows and a hook split shot rig or jig head in March and April for my walleye fishing.I also like to fish minnows or a nice chub on a tipup through the ice for walleye and cat.Waxies just arent a very efective tipup bait therefore I chose not to fish lakes w no live bait regulation on them and at the rate its going in a few years I will no longer have the need to buy a NE liscense. The game and parks does some good things but they also do some dumb things and screw things up.I think the biggest problem with the G&P is that it is an appointed position and it should be an elected position.I have dealt w plenty of people down there and most not all but most have good knowledge and want things to improve.I have been to several meetings for public input and it is a joke.Go in speak your mind and comissioners do what they had planned already. The youth pheasant hunt is a great thing but why not release 100 birds at B.O. Yankee and Wagontrain the night before and do the same thing in a few spots to the west also.I know what the awnser is going to be but 10 spots times 100 birds is 1000 birds times 10.00 a bird=$10,000 to give ALOT of kids the chance at a decent FIRST hunt and a good memory and give them the desire to continue hunting.I know more than that is spent on hunter/angler recruitment every year.More than that is spent to pump the basins and give the adults a chance at a good duck hunt.Anyways just an example and back to the subject.Minnows will ALWAYS be in every waterbody and it is illegal to dump your minnows and is also illegal to transfer fish.It is a redicilous law to put in effect when you already have laws against it.NO speeding on Holdrege St(dumping or transfer) but if you do you will get a ticket oh and there is no speeding(Using live bait) on O St but if you do you will get a ticket.YA THAT MAKES SENSE.RANT OVER
