Yes, the standard weight equation for those two species reflect that bluegills weigh more per inch than redears. Bluegills are a little "fatter", "deeper".

By the way, HOLY COW, Bruce. What a fish!

I've heard about you and seen you in the paper for the wiper at Branched Oak. All I can say now is I am going to create a shrine to you because your a fishing GOD.

I just wish I had the time to do what you do and get good at it. Research and understanding is what it takes but I just dont know where to find those resources.

Keep up the good work though. I still aspire to be as good as the likes of you.

Biggest gills I've ever seen.

I'll be doing an article on the adventure for In-Fisherman magazine that will run this coming spring. I'm co-writing with one of their contributors Jim Gronaw.
I hope, for fisheries sake, you leave the name of the lake out(if public)of the article.Seeing fish like that, the size of the lake, and then a public article on it could ruin the waterbody/fish population in a hurry. Chance at a fish like that would make guys travel long distances to catch and/or harvest them.

All good points. We're walking a really fine line here. The owners of the lake, which is 130 acres, have a business where they entertain clients of big businesses. The day includes guided fishing (for largemouth), gourmet meals, live jazz music, and incredible overnight lodgings. They invited Jim Gronaw and myself there because they want some press. But there's also always the possibility of too much press.

The article will be called "The pursuit of the 2 lb. bluegill", and it will talk about both public and private fisheries. Lake Perris in California is probably the premeir public fishery, and Richmond Mill is probably the premier private fishery. I'm going to try to get to Lake Perris sometime to fish for 2 lbs fish there as well.

In-Fisherman is so science based, that they'll insist that this doesn't become a promotional piece. Their journalistic standards are very high.

Believe it or not, Richmond Mill was being managed and developed to produce a trophy largemouth fishery....The trophy bluegill fishery was just a happy accident. VERY happy.

Actually, to be more accurate about the bluegill being a "happy accident", the lake is being managed by pond and lake guru Bob Lusk, and he understood that there would be some giant bluegill. He made mention of it several times during the early stages of this lake's development. It was just everybody else that were so tickled by the emergence of this massive year class of 1.5 to 2.5 pound bluegill.

The largemouth are so far a "puny" four to seven pounds at the top end.
