Well I am sitting here at work going insane with boredome and trying to come up with something to do. The question of quality VS quantity poped into my mind. So I thought I would post a poll and see what everyone else thinks.
The categories are as follows: In a 4 hour time period, would you rather catch 50 fish of small to average size, or 15 fish of average size or 2 fish of or near master angler quality. |

I'd rather eat 15 average-sized crappie than 2 near-MAs.

I'm an action junkie, within limits, so I went with the 15 fish.

i'd rather catch two big fish and release them. it's more of a challenge and i can catch plenty of table fare fish if i get the craving.

If I went out and caught 2 19-inch LMB in a 4-hour trip I'd consider it fairly successful. If I caught 2 9.5- inch BG in a 4 hour trip i'd be bummed. So I'd say "it depends". In general. I'd go with option #2.

![]() It is both species dependent and dependent on whether my kids are with me. I chose 2 MA because on MOST of the species I target, if my kids were not along that would be my preference. Of course option 2 & 3 together would rock. |

I'd much rather catch 2 bigger fish than a bunch of average/smaller fish.

I agree with Alex.
Catching 2 large fish sounds so much more rewarding that 15 ave sized fish. Go BIG or go home

I would say the absolute non answer, it depends. It depends on the species and what my own personal "needs" are at the time. If I target BO flatheads, option number 3. For something I want to take home and eat, option number 2. If I take my nephews out, option number 1. An answer without an answer.

I wish people would eat at McDonalds and leave the fish in the lake. If that happened more often, both options 2 and 3 would be more likely. Having said that, I want to fish in a lake where I can get bites and catch fish every 20-30 minutes or better. If those fish are 11" Rainbows, 19" Largemouth, 30" Pike- so be it. Catching fish with some frequency and not always getting them exactly the same size is part of the fun! We all have varying attention spans. If it ain't happening in a half hour, I start to move on to something else.
Before the floods of '93, Coralville Dam by Iowa City was a blast. You could tie on a yellow Mr. Twister (or any shad imitation) and catch Wipers, Crappies, Walleyes, Largemouth and Channel Catfish. That was all on the same lure! The size was all over the map. Every catch was like opening a gift at Christmas. |

I'd have to go with 2 near MA fish... or just 1 MA in a 4 hour period would be fine with me if thats all I caught.

I gotta say it depends on my mood. Sometimes I just want to go out and turn the brain off and just catch a bunch of fish. If I'm in a more patience mood then I would take the two toads and call it a good day.
![]() I guess it also depends on how far into the 4 hrs you catch the biggie. When I catch a whopper I can ride that high for hours. ![]()

I'd rather catch bigger fish than smaller fish...but if bigger fish aren't biting, I'd rather catch smaller fish than no fish... one of the keys here is to 'define' what is 'bigger'...if it's Master Angler...most folks will be disappointed more often than not... is it '75%' of a MA fish? I bet it still depends upon the species... |

I guess what I was thinking was kinda like this.
Example: 50 lmb less than 13" 15 lmb 13" to 16" 2 lmb 17" or bigger I am very pleased with the amount of input that has been shared with this thread. I did think that there would be a few more "action junkies"(thanks Holdem for that term), but so far it is about like I expected. Thanks Last edited by swoab47; 10-16-2009 at 09:00 PM.. |

At this point of my fishing INexperience, and considering I'm always fishing with kids, I'll be one of the few, if only, going with the quantity. It's necessary to keep the kids entertained and there's nothing better than one fish after another am I right? Now, if I was out there by myself, which I've never been, then possibly I'd go for the smaller quantities and better qualities because I'd be able to concentrate and work for that fish.
