I will do that either tonight or tomorrow, great idea. I was going to do that once all the cabins are reserved, but I'll get that up soon.

THANK YOU!

It might help should someone think they have one held, since there are a couple still available!

The tournament has been canceled once in it's 25 year history due to ice conditions. Going off memory, but I believe it was 2004, might have been 03. Scheduled tourney date was the 2nd weekend in February. We didn't have a lot of ice that year and then got a schnook wind for 3 days in early Feb. Cut the ice off all the lake around here. Sandhill lakes refroze, but Merritt stayed open.

Takes a while for Merritt to ice up, (mid December) but after it's on there is usually ice until March.

Has this trip happened yet? I am prob. just blind, but I don't see the dates. A friend of my family lives in Valentine and I have been thinking about making it up there for some ice fishing this year.

Someone can correct me if I happen to be wrrrrrrrrrr.... but I believe those with cabins are registered for Friday nite (Jan 22) and Saturday nite (Jan 23). I expect Saturday will be the "big day" and extended into Sunday.

There will be several "on the ice" on Friday, if not chasin' Roodies on the Refuge!

How'd I do, Ryan?

Harold hit it on the head.

The cabins are reserved for the night of the 22nd (Friday) and the 23rd (Saturday). As of this moment, there is one cabin with one double bed available.

Staying in the cabins is not required to come out here, nor are you required to stay the night at all. There are other options for lodging in the area, Valentine has several motels.

Live bait is not allowed on the refuge lakes, but if you're fishing Big Alkali live bait is allowed.

Chuck, I can't help much with the tip ups. Someone else with a much better perspective will give you information much more worthwhile than I could give.

What is the official (fishing) plan? We are not staying in the fish camp but will certainly meet up and bring up all the gear. Is everyone for the most part heading to the same lake or is everyone fishing the lake of their choice? IMO their is no such thing as a bad lake to fish but some years one is producing better than others. Maybe HTC or DC. can shed some light on wich lake would allow guys to fish for pike and panfish. I have fished Pelican,Dewey and clear in the past few years with great sucess on pike but didn't even try for panfish.

If I was the guide, which I am not, I would have people fish Pelican. Both pike and gills with a few largemouth and perch. We have been doing real good at Pelican this year. Also more area to fish, especially pike.

Pelican or Dewey would be good for both pike and pan fish.

I know that the best time to fish is whenever you can out, but if you had to plan I sometimes will look at the solunar calendar. The weekend for the get together looks to be a pretty decent time according to the gods.

If anybody is headed that way from the Omaha area and would like to bring a box of handwarmers to share with everybody courtesy of Recycled Fish, let me know and I'll be happy to donate them.

That is, unless DC still has some on hand that he can bring?

Have fun this weekend, men.
