Sorry, I don't really know how to search on here for previous threads. I was curious when the drawing is for Paddlefish tags? I thought it was sometime this month.

G&P site only says "august".
But as the open application time frame is from August 15th-31st, I'd assume you can narrow the drawing date down to Aug 1 - Aug 14. Is there ever tags available after the drawing?

They draw permits in early August.
I dont' think there are many, if any, permits for the second round most years. It is a lot of fun and they are delicious. Make sure to bring plenty of extra weights and hooks, especially if you fish from the shore. I tie a treble on and leave about 6 inches of line. Take some plumbers tape and use it to secure the line around the hook shaft so it trails in-line from the bottom of the hook. tie a snap swivel as close to the bottom of the hook as possible. Then prepare a dozen 1-2oz weights on some line ~1-2 feet long, make sure the line is lighter than the main line. The weight is what usually get caught in the rocks, if it breaks off just grab a new weight and snap it on. If possible, don't use lead since there is probably several thousand pounds of lead already decaying in the rocks. Maybe someone can help with a few more questions. How does the point system work specifically, can you find out if/how many points you have? Do you get a point for late applications? Is there a way to decline and get a point? Sorry if this info is in the guide. I did look at it. The guide seemed to have, in my opinion, too much info on last years application numbers and very little on the actual system. |

The number of applicants is more than double the number of tags they issue. People who applied and got turned away last year should get tags before anyone else. I've still heard a few rumors of mistakes happening in the issuing process though. Last year it was near the end of Aug before you knew if you're successful or not...

In the drawing, anyone with two points(or whatever is the max) gets tags. Then the one-points get tags(draw if #'s exceed tags available) Then they draw among the no-points if there's any remaining tags. Nonresident tags are drawn separately from residents, but the same system. You cannot decline or transfer a tag. And you will get no points for a late app. |

Got my first tag ever last year and filled it. I applied again this year and I'm hopeful, but realize that the point system will make it tricky. I used to be a skeptic, as it seems odd to purposely "snag" a fish, but it is an absolute blast. I'll probably go up just to watch even if I don't get a tag. Maybe I'll hit a hole or two up north this fall. October is such a great time to fish, I'm sure I'll survive without a tag.
