Without a boat all I can do is fish cat's and crappie and gill's from the bank. My favorite sport fish is looking for channel's or any other sort of cat's. I've fished for cat's with shad side's, gut's, worm's, cut bait, blood bait's ect. Chicken liver is one bait that is cheap easy to find and doe's catch some nice channel's as I have heard. But my question is how to keep it on the hook. I have tried drying it out a little to make it tougher, rubber band's around trebble hooks, and the panti hoose trick ( wich sound's like it would work if done properly). Could the liver fisher's help me out and teach me some new method's of fishing chicken liver. Thanks for the help.

Recipe #1 Wet livers....
I've found that turkey livers are tougher from the start and each one can be cut into 3 or 4 baits. Put 2 lbs. of livers in a 2qt. plastic container with a screw on lid.( I use a large peanut butter jar.) Add approx. 1/2-3/4 pound of NON iodized table salt. Then you can add either a LARGE dose of garlic salt, (or garlic oil), or a bottle of anise extract. I take a jar of each flavor with me. The salt will "brine" the livers, and toughen them up a bunch, yet they still stay moist. This recipe will last a very long time without refrigeration. They really stay on the hook. Recipe #2 Dry livers... Put livers on a slightly slanted cookie sheet covered with foil, drain off the excess blood~~~ (put extra blood and small pieces in separate container for chum). Sprinkle Heavily with garlic salt/powder and coat livers completely with table salt. Let them air dry approx. 2 hrs. outdoors. (more or less depending on weather), flip them over and repeat. This puts a "crust" on them, while sealing the juices inside. Store in Zip lock bags. These livers last longer if refrigerated or stored in a cool spot.

I use salmon egg netting,it's what they used to tie together salmon eggs into baits. can be done either at lake or at home before hand. cut a peice of netting off about 4"x4" and place a peice of liver on it,pull 4 corners together and tie off with the rubber string they sell next to the netting or regular string if you don't have any, trim the ends and put back into liver container til ready to fish, you can now fish them with a regular hook instead of a treble and just hook once through the netting and back out and catch some fish, sometimes one bait will work for quite a few fish before getting to tore up.

I always use the pantyhose method, never had a problem with it

I also never have had a problem keeping liver on the hooks. I always thread them at least half a dozen times. Most of the liver will tear, but there are some connective tissues in them that I kind of wrap around my hook. I have noticed that rotting livers are much harder to keep on a hook than fresh ones, but they also are nasty and don't work as well (IMO), so I simply don't use them.

Turkey livers are the way to go, much tougher than chicken. I also only use a circle hook for them. Whatever you do, be responsible and at the end of your fishing trip DO NOT LEAVE THE LIVER CONTAINERS LAYING AROUND TO BAKE IN THE SUN!

We use about 15-18 inches of white thread on a circle hook. Stays on pretty good. Even with the little critters suckin on it.

It does work if you use the pantyhose on the liver instead of wearing them. Good one! ![]() A little easier method is a square of cheese cloth with liver in the middle. Fold the cloth around the liver and run your hook through the corners of the cheese cloth.

I would think that yes scheels would have some netting, but I get to scheels maybe once a year or so, so I cannot say for sure. If they do it should be near the salmon eggs/trout lures and baits,at least that would be the common sense place to have it. I bought a bunch years ago and it was like a buck and a half for a roll. can't be beat for fishing livers.I keep a roll in a tray of my catfish box and always misplace my string and end up using some light mono line to tie off with, but the stretchy thread stuff works awesome. just gotta make do sometimes when you are suffering for CRS (can't remember #$%^)all the time.

When I buy liver I cut it into bait-size chunks and put the chunks in a ziplock bag. Then I put the bag in the freezer, laying it flat so all of the chunks of liver freeze in a single layer. You end up with a frozen, flat bag of livers. Toss them in a cooler with some ice, which keeps them semi-frozen. Break a chunk off, push the hook through it and cast - works great! Probably 99% sucess rate in getting a good chunk of liver into the water without losing it.
I've tried the panty hose thing, and although it works, be prepared to hack the panty hose off of your hooks. Once it gets past the barb it's impossible to get back off. I've also done the thread thing. Works well, but what a pain and it takes too much time. |

Everyone seems to have a method, oh well I'll tell u mine. By a louffa ( the scrunchy thing that women use in the shower. Then go to the super market and buy a 1000 ft spool of twist tie line, it comes w/ a cutter on it so u can use different lengths for different presentations, not to mention they come in handy in a million other situations. Once u get the loufa unravled, you'll find there's like 50 ft of mesh in those things (plenty for a normal season of liver fishing. Wrap a section of loufa mesh around the liver on your hook and tie it tight w/ the twist tie, I'd also recomend trimming the tag ends of the twist tie line so nothing gets in the way of hook point. There you go cheap and simple, just like me!
