Nebraska sheriff says ricochet fatally wounded teen

By The Associated Press
Tuesday, Jun 09, 2009 - 08:16:53 am CDT
EWING — Services have been set for a northeast Nebraska teenager who was accidentally shot and killed while fishing.

Wheeler County Sheriff Adrian Lindsay says 16-year-old Jacob Rudolf died Saturday night.

Lindsay says Rudolf was fishing at a farm pond southwest of Ewing.

One of Rudolf’s friends was firing a .22-caliber rifle at frogs when one of the bullets ricocheted off the water surface and hit Rudolf in the stomach.

Rudolf was taken to Antelope Memorial Hospital in Neligh, where he died.

The sheriff says his investigation of the shooting continues but that it most likely was accidental.

The services for Rudolf are set for 10:30 a.m. Friday at the Ewing Public High School gym.

Thats horrible..

I'm kind of stunned/shocked that the 22 in the stomach killed him. Then again maybe they were out in the middle of BFE too.

If you look at almost any list of firearms saftey rules it will tell you not to fire into water. I believe it is also taught in hunter's saftey. Any firearm can be lethal including a .22 rimfire. Gunshot wounds can be strange. One friend of mine was shot through the neck with a 7.62X54R and lived while a .22 rimfire in the abdomen was lethal in this case. Teach yourself and your kids to be safe.

very sorry to hear this, but angry too, people think a .22 is a toy to be played with, and it can do some bad damage,or cause death as in this case, what an absolutly unneeded fatality.

I would not have thought that a .22 in the stomach would kill either, and the only thing I can think of is that as it ricocheted that the lead bullet turned into a flat frisbee type shape that caused serious internal bleeding and didn't look like much on the outside,so nobody got too exited about getting to a doctor? A .22 is well known for the bullet straying around after hitting flesh without exiting, maybe that is the case? still sorry to hear of anything like this, and my prayers go out to the family.

If you're unlucky enough that the .22 hit your abdominal aorta you can bleed out internally relatively fast if you don't have access to a surgeon. .22's are much more dangerous than people give them credit for. They have tendency to enter and ricochet inside rather than exiting.

This is so sad for those families. I can't imagine the feeling. Definitely will need prayers.

Sad sad story. Its easy to pass judgement in this scenario, but I look back on some of the dumber stuff I did as a kid and realize that this could happen to a lot of kids. I hope the parents can find some comfort during this time. Yes this was preventable, but even good kids with responsible parents can have this lapse of judgement. I remember about that age shooting 22's with my friends at popcans on a sand mound and to this day I don't know how it happened but our best guess is one bad shot ricocheted off of a 50 gallon metal barrel not far away and hit the ground not that far from where we were standing. 22's can do some really weird stuff.

.22's are very very lethal

most higher caliber rounds will enter the body and exit. A .22 will enter and ricochet all inside you! A .22 is one of the more lethal calibers out there.

Sad story
