They have been done here in SW Nebraska for at least a couple weeks now. The shorelines are just loaded with eggs.

I was fishing the banks of Zorinsky and found a bunch of bigger shad swimming in circles close to shore just a few weeks ago and thought I would bring my net and scoop a few up for catfish bait. I also brought along my ultralight to catch some crappie that were spawning(I think) in the reeds. I ended up up catching what I think was a female gizzard shad on my marabou jig, and when I reeled her in a bunch of of males followed her to shore. I ended up scooping up a bunch of the males that followed her at first, and then had the great idea of letting her swim back out about ten yards and reeling her back in. Every time she was acompanied by a half dozen males and I would just scoop them up and throw them in the bucket. Now I have a couple dozen frozen shad to use at Zorinsky anytime I have trouble catching other bait for catfish. I do hate to see all the 6-8 inch gizzard shad in that lake, but when life gives you lemons, you might as well make lemonaid.

actually, I think it's about over...I was at Z a couple weeks ago and they were 'in the middle' of it...typically, happens after bass spawn...pretty shortly...as the females take advantage of this to help feed back up...where there are shad..
