Default New fresh water fisherman....advice needed

Ok so I moved here from NJ, and have been a salt water fisherman my whole life. Really enjoy Desoto Bend and Standing Bear.....also enjoy Zorinski.....any advice on what you may be using to catch bass? I have tried spinner baits, live bait, etc. Minimal success. Lots of crappie though......

Im out at least twice a week.....

Also looking to try and cathc some cats, drum, or carp. I saw a guy reel in a 15 pound carp this morning at the docks at Zorinki. I have used the dough bait but it fals apart so easily.......any advice there....

Thanks!

You might give a topwater lure a try like a buzzbait, pop-r or frog. Try them at low light times like morning or evening. I like to also fish with senko or YUM dingers. If you head out to Louisville you could try and catch some Generic Anger's pet bass he has out there.
You might check out the beginners corner section here on the board also.

Welcome!

If you want carp, you should head to Desoto...Corn on the bottom or suspended on off the bottom will catch carp during these hot summer months (anywhere on the lake). For drum I'd say either throw a live crawler on the bottom or else hit a couple of the wing dams on the river by Desoto.

If you are catching large quantities of Crappie, keep doing what you are doing. That same technique will turn up other fish as well.

If you really want to chase small brained LMB....Buy a bag of those silly colored plastic worms and stick one on a hook with no other weight and plop it out there and then watch all of those silly fish with the big mouths beat a path to it as it sinks thinking it is a meal. The only bad part about fishing this way is that all of the other specious are too smart to fall for it, so you will be limiting yourself to green carp.

Another good place for drum, and several other species including flathead and channel catfish is Boyer Chute, on the NE side of the Mo river.

For carp, grab a slice of bread, fresh bread! take out enough of the center to cover your hook, squeezing it on there tightly, take your bread ball and dip it quickly in a can of corn/creamed corn, cast out with as little weight as possible. Catch carp, take pics, then thank thedarkarcher for posting that tip on here somewhere awhile back.

Default Storm’s doughball for carp

We used to have one heck of a fisherman named "Storm" who participated in this Forum. Here is his recipe for carp:
Quote:
Cornmeal
Sugar
Salt
Vanilla

There you have it ... Bring water to boil and then add sugar and create a simple syrup by making sure all sugar is dissolved and if it's not you will know later [it 'will' crumble] ...

After you bring it to a good boil and you have created a simple syrup , then add a teaspoon or two of 'real' vanilla extract , use imitation and you will see a difference in your results ... Then add a 'pinch' of salt ...

Once added , then slowly add cornmeal and by using a fork make sure you keep stirring , add until you see it popping air bubbles and then add a light dusting and remove from pan onto a countertop or a nice hard surface and start squeezing & slapping it around , this must be done while it's extremely hot ... Once you finish that , then store in your 'refrigerator' ... If you ever find yourself needing to use flour for dough ball , your doing something very wrong ... Keep it very basic ...

Use a small to medium size treble hook and place enough dough ball to merely create a teardrop shape ball covering the hook , use no weight at all and merely 'swing' it out there rather than whip it out there and truly drive around a Lake or a body of water and look for Carp moving around ...

That's an interesting recipe. May have to give it a try (a can of corn is just so darned convenient, though)!
