This is the first year I've really had an opportunity to target walleye through the ice and I'm having less than marginal success. I'm heading out this afternoon to try again and would love to get some tips. Not looking for hot spots or anything like that, but types of structure to look for, probable depths, and tips on types of baits would be great. My previous ice fishing experience has been targeting panfish almost exclusively. Thanks for any advice.

I've never fished Wherspan but the walleyes I have been getting are on a small jig/minnow combo near bottom in 12-15 FOW off points. (iced 4 yesterday)

Every year there are stories (urban legends?) about big walleyes in the local lakes. Think it's like other big fish of any species...takes time and commitment and sometimes a bit of luck. Then, too, the folks targeting/scratching these big fish are pretty tightmouthed about it...
Once spent a day on Summit fishing bass. Lots of bass, couldn't hardly keep them off...but over half the boats on the lake that day were trolling looking for walleyes  even though if caught they would be quite small. So you can imagine what a local lake would look like if someone were to catch and talk about a 7+pounder...or bigger... Talk about a basic fixation...

I once caugh a 7.5 lb eye at Standing Bear on a plastic worm fishing for bass. And I saw someone loose an even bigger one at Cunningham during the spawn. The really big ones may be rare but they are around.

Ended up going out from about 4:00-8:45. Final tally: 3 Bass between 12-14 inches, 3 gills all under 8 inches, 1 channel cat around 15" (my fist cat through the ice) and 1 walleye about 12". Beautiful evening to be out, but the fish just weren't cooperating. Talked to two other groups who had similar results. There were a few small crappie caught also.
