I heard a rumor that Sandbilly and a partner won an icefishing tournament recently. Anybody know any of the details?

It's the truth; I got a pm from him yesterday with a pic. He was having a little trouble with the site at that time. They caught some nice fish.

Congrats dc; you the "man."

According to that Journal-Star article, Sandbilly and his partner "Dave Fehlhafer of Lincoln weighed in 23 crappies for a total of 21.48 pounds. Second place went to Scott Bancroft and Ken Anderson, both of Valentine, who caught 18 crappies weighing in at 13.41 pounds..." The Sandbilly-Fehlhafer team also had the largest crappie, a 2.1 pounder!

Which still begs the question, "Did my friend Sandbilly catch a fish, or did this Fehlhafer guy catch them all?"

OBG you're just upset because we didn't win with gills.:zrazzing:

In reality, it was Dave's tourney. (Dave is my brother in-law and long time ice fishing partner) He found what we were looking for (suspended crappie) on Saturday while I went to the oldest son's wrestling meet. He also caught the 2.10lb crappie and 2/3 of our weighable fish on Sun. My largest crappie was 1.70lbs. The only thing I could catch for awhile were cats which didn't count in the tourney. 4 total, largest being 11lbs 9oz according to an ice official that had a scale there when I landed it. They were mixed in with the crappie 12-22ft over 45fow feeding on dieing bait fish.

In the days when we would have ice for more than a month, I found there would be a couple of weeks where the fish would become very inactive. With the bait fish dieing and target fish in the doldrums it made for a tough tourney. Out of every 20 suspended burns that came thru I would get 1 to follow the jig up. 50% of those follows I could catch. Dave had more success on the followers. We were pulling these fish up 5-8 feet before they would commit. The other thing we did different from anyone else was to only fish one rod apiece. No minnow poles, just moving burns on the vexilar up to our jigs and feel/watch the line when they met. We usually only fish one rod anyway unless on a lake like Big Alkali.

Out of the few ice tournaments we've won, including a couple of Ice Team tourneys, this one means the most to us. The memory of Cork Thornton. History of ice fishing in the area, Merritt in the 70's, Valentine Refuge Lakes in the 80's and 90's mean a lot to Dave and I. But mostly its the names on the plaque of past winners and the ones before that. These are the people that taught us, helped us and beat us for the last 15 years. To have our names among them is indescribable.

Great job, Don. Congratulations to you both.

Spring can't come fast enough for me. We've gotta go chase some bluegills again.:d
