I haven't used a Showdown myself other than playing around a little with one for a little while, but I think they're pretty intriguing. I know a few people that have them and really like them. Once you get the hang of them the grayscale reading should tell you what you need to know re: bottom hardness and transitions. They sure are nice compact units. It's just that I've just been a "flasher guy" for so long that I can't really see myself ice fishing without one ......

Really about the same time as you do there. Seems like the "northern Nebraska" water freezes up a couple of weeks before it does down here. I'd have to check the wife's calendar to see when we started last year. Know we're doing it over Christmas time frame normally. Can't wait!

Did a little reading about this Showdown gizmo. Apparently it's selling point, aside from being a vertical pixel graph, is that it has 1/2" target separation, while most other flashers only have 1" target separation. So the Showdown will show two bluegill swimming 1/2" apart as two separate fish, whereas the Vexilar will show them as 1 fish until they're at least an inch apart. So it's got that going for it...which is nice.

Looking forward to trying it out on the boat also. Someone mentioned the original model had a 8 degree cone, this one has an 18 degree pattern. Not sure what the vexs have.

UPDATE...Love the new unit! We were fishing in 15' of water, adjusted the unit to show surface to 20', REALLY showed everything that swam through the column. So nice to be able to watch the waxie drop right on top of the fish and to also see fish going after the bait! We had a Vex sitting within 3' of it, no interference. Sure worth it to me...

You bet! Couple dozen nice trout, bunch of smaller gills, one smaller cat and Pontoonfisher got a nice 11" crappie, all within 2 hours! Sure was fun!
