I, like most would like to see the Omaha area lakes stay open for TRUE FISHERMEN, that are responsible fishermen past the 10:00 pm closing!

What if we all contacted our various Omaha City Councilmen and constructively voiced our opinion's about setting up some type of system to register for all night fishing? Then see if they would put this subject on a Omaha City Council Meeting agenda?

Now I know some of you might say, that this will never happen! Maybe it would or could happen with a real effort from members of this Forum! If we could come up with a real idea and plan, that wouldn't cost the city money...we might get them to listen! We all would like to hear your suggestions and idea's for making this happen!

One idea might be to have a 24 HOUR LAKES PERMIT, where fishermen could pay a reasonable annual fee and sign-in and out at the gate entrance. Ideally, it would be nice to be issued a gate key with the permit and make "mis-use" punishable by legal trespassing law etc. Leaving the gates open, but posting entrance's might be another idea i.e. NO ENTRY BY ANYONE AFTER 10 PM DAILY WITHOUT AUTHORIZED NIGHT FISHING PERMIT!....

If enough of us who enjoy the Omaha Lakes would make those calls or send Emails to our City Councilmen and then show up to a City Council Meeting, we might get something done! It would take an all out organzed effort by those interested!

My 2 cent worth....Or am I just dreaming?
Geezer

Well,I guess I'm not part of your 'most' crowd. The only lakes that would affect would be Cunningham,Zorinsky and Standing Bear as Walnut Creek,Wehrspann, and Prairie View(the only ones with gates) aren't in the city of Omaha. Call the city council if ya want. I've yet to see anyone get kicked out of Zorinsky or Standing Bear for fishing after park hours, nor Cunningham when it was open. Ever notice how much nicer the lake property is for the gated lakes compared to the 'open' lakes in regards to trash, grafitti, etc.? I would think once Cunningham re-opens,it'll have gates also.Or,it should IMO. BTW,the idea of giving keys out is just asking for the right to be abused. Asking for another fee for fishing won't go over well either. Who's gonna check to see if people have their 'nite fishing' permit? I say fish where you can after 10:00 and enjoy.8)

I'm not condoning the breaking of the law, but I can't count the number of times I've seen guys fishing, or fished myself, some of these lakes well past closing time. I've even seen Omaha's finest drive in after midnight see me and Dad fishing and just leave on more than one occasion. I know a few of the guys on this forum have been out at Zorinsky all night till daylight. It may not be right for some guys, me included, to blatantly break the rules. But, if the cops and the parks guys don't care why should I? Most of the guys out there fishing don't cause any problems and the law enforcers realize this and just let them enjoy their hobbies. It is breaking the law and anyone doing it could get in trouble for it, but they (the police) won't say anything to you unless you're causing a problem.

It's very noble of you to want to do the right thing and get permission to fish these places after hours, I applaud you for that OGG :zclap:

All I can say is the Devil made me do it :d

I agree with Alex and Clucker. I've never had any trouble fishing at Zorinsky or Cunningham past 10:00 p.m. Once even, while fishing at Zorinsky, I had a police officer come up and ask how the fishing was. I'm sure he was checking in to make sure there wasn't any funny business going on and there wasn't so he moved along around the lake.

I think contacting the City Council folks will most likely end in a dead end, and even more likely, draw attention to the fact that people ARE fishing there after 10:00 p.m. which may lead them to ask for stepped-up enforcement...then we're all SOL...JMHO, though.

That must have been a brief stop. I've heard watching you fish can be hilarious.

I agree, you can fish the "city" lakes, Zorinsky, Standing Bear and my fav, Cunningham all night with no problem now. Yes, we all know what the rules state. I've never had any trouble fishing on those lakes all night. The police come by and check and as long as you are just fishing, there is no problem and they don't bother you.

Werspahn, Prairie View, and Walnut Creek are not city lakes. Whole different ball of wax with the NRD.

It's a largely unspoken rule on the Omaha city lakes. I mean, they actually leave the gates open and at times there are 20 boats out on Zorinsky all night long in the summer. I'm sure that fact has not escaped ALL the city councilmen. Heck, I think some of them and maybe a good number of the police and sheriffs dept are out there fishing themselves (off-duty, of course) at times.

I say leave well enough alone, it's no big secret, but given the cities nannie-pants attitude about sled riding in the parks lately, it's an issue I'd rather not see brought up with the city.

I'd like to see a after-dark fishing permit for L-ville and TR too, but I don't think it's going to happen.
